Our CHEER family just got a little bigger!

Over the summer, these compassionate individuals completed their training and are officially ready to bring comfort, connection, and joy to local seniors.

Our CHEER program empowers adults 60 and older to live independently and age in place with dignity. By pairing homebound or isolated seniors with dedicated volunteers for weekly visits, the program provides practical support—like grocery shopping, prescription pick-ups, and errands—along with the priceless gift of true companionship.

In a world facing a growing loneliness epidemic, these weekly visits create lasting friendships and serve as a vital lifeline for physical and mental well-being.

Want to bring hope and a friendly face to a senior neighbor? The next CHEER training is set for Friday 9/11 from 10am - 11am. Apply today at:

Six decades of community impact are built on the visionary support of dedicated local leaders. 🌟

As part of our 60th Anniversary Diamond Jubilee, we are thrilled to introduce our second honorees: Amy & Mark Shirvan!

Amy and Mark are passionate philanthropists and community leaders whose overarching mission focuses on health, wellness, and education, as well as services for older adults across Bergen County.

Through the Amy and Mark Shirvan Family Foundation, they guide investments in vital initiatives throughout northern New Jersey. Their impact includes establishing the Shirvan Family Live Well Center at Englewood Health, which offers free nutrition, fitness, emotional wellness, and health education to the community.

At Bergen Volunteers, their generosity made possible the creation of the Amy and Mark Shirvan Family Senior Safety Initiative—a crucial program dedicated to identifying and mitigating safety risks in the homes of older adults so they can continue living independently with confidence.

Additionally, Mark serves as a longtime Board Trustee of the Kaplan JCC on the Palisades, and Amy serves on the Board of Trustees for the Englewood Health Foundation, where she helps advance the organization’s mission to provide exceptional healthcare and expand access to innovative healthcare programs.

Amy and Mark, thank you for your deep commitment to strengthening the fabric of our community and protecting our seniors.

✨ Want to celebrate Amy & Mark with us at our 60th Anniversary Diamond Jubilee on November 19th? Tickets are now available for purchase at the link in our bio.

🚂 Hear that whistle? That means another senior in Bergen County is on the track to a safer home!

Meet Dan, one of our volunteer schedulers for the Amy & Mark Shirvan Family Senior Safety Initiative. Dan is a retired music educator who, as a percussionist, owns lots of bells and whistles. Every time he books a free home safety evaluation, he sounds his trusty train whistle to celebrate a senior neighbor taking that vital first step.

From identifying trip hazards, faulty smoke detectors, insufficient lighting, and the need for grab bars, to referring repairs to our CHORE program, we’re here to help our senior neighbors age more safely and confidently in place.

📞 Know a senior who could use a free home safety evaluation? Call us today at 201-489-6106 or email Diana at [email protected] to get them on board!

Two weeks, two incredible groups of teens, and a summer we won't forget! With Week 2 wrapping up on Friday, our Teen LEADS Summer Exploration program has officially come to a close. Watching both cohorts step up, connect, and unlock their leadership potential has definitely been the highlight of our summer.

Teen LEADS wouldn’t be possible without the incredible support of our community partners and sponsors. A big thank you to THE HELLER FAMILY, Veolia - Water North Jersey, NVE Bank, A Division of Ion Bank, and NJM Insurance Group for investing in Bergen County’s next generation of changemakers.

To all of our incredible summer participants: thank you for filling these past two weeks with your passion, ideas, and energy. Good luck this school year—we know you’re going to do amazing things! 🌟

Join us in congratulating Paul Coller for being recognized as a "Hometown Hero" by U.S. Congressman Josh Gottheimer (NJ-5)! 🏆

A Ramsey resident for forty-one years and U.S. Army Reserve veteran, Paul has dedicated nearly a decade of service to the mission of Bergen Volunteers with our CHORE program, traveling across Bergen County to perform vital home repairs for our most vulnerable seniors. His technical skills, care and compassion are instrumental in helping these residents age in place safely and with dignity. Paul has also served on Bergen Volunteers’ Board of Directors for seven years, including two years as President.

As our CEO, Shara Nadler, put it best: " Paul Coller’s commitment to service demonstrates the profound impact one individual can have when they dedicate their time and talent to help their neighbors. Our volunteers are ordinary people doing extraordinary things every day. Paul represents the very best of what it means to be a Hometown Hero.”

Thank you, Paul, for your endless dedication, hard work, and leadership. We couldn't be prouder to see you get this well-deserved recognition!

We were proud to partner with Cole Schotz and Bergen CASA for a meaningful Community Impact Project last week.

A huge thank you to all the dedicated volunteers and team members from Cole Schotz P.C. who gave their time and energy to support our neighbors. Together, we filled backpacks with school supplies to give local children in need the gift of a proud, more confident start to their school year.

Last year, our volunteer-powered senior service programs (CHEER, CHORE, and the Shirvan Family Senior Safety Initiative) provided entirely free wellness and social connections, minor home repairs, and comprehensive home safety evaluations to more than 1,700 local seniors.

However, right now, due to widespread funding cuts and rising community needs, we are facing serious challenges in keeping up with the demand for our services.

We urgently need your support. Will you help us continue this life-changing work by making a gift today? Your donation directly ensures vulnerable seniors in Bergen County can live safely, independently, and with dignity.

Thank you for your care and compassion. Please make your gift at the link in our bio.
