In April 1776, the Continental Line and local militias prepared to defend New York and New Jersey following the British evacuation of Boston. Americans had to work quickly to strengthen Manhattan’s fortifications due to the arrival of General George Washington on April 13 to begin inspections. An orderly book from Capt. John Schenck’s company in our collection captures these efforts. Highlights include a March 31 order noting British movements and an April 3 entry detailing work completed by a New Jersey battalion.

You might think "Yankee Doodle" is just a simple nursery rhyme, but it was actually the biggest diss track of the American Revolution. The British first sang the tune to mock American soldiers. In a show of patriotic defiance, the Continental Army took it back and reportedly played it during the British surrender at Yorktown.

Still, no one really knows where ‘Yankee Doodle’ originally came from.
