🚨Press Release: 5 Men Charged in Connection with Armed Robbery and Aggravated Assault🚨

With the profound assistance of the Bergen County Prosecutor's Office, Passaic County Prosecutor's Office, Passaic Police Department, West Orange Police Department, Scranton PA Police Department, and Wilkes-Barre PA Police Department, 5 men (2 from NJ and 3 from PA) were arrested and charged last week in connection with a May 2026 armed robbery that occurred in South Hackensack.

One handgun with an extended magazine was recovered and is now safely off our streets.

In addition to the above agencies, the SHPD would also like to acknowledge Det. Kyle Skelley, the case detective, for his contributions to the investigation. 🫆

𝗬𝗢𝗨 𝗥𝗘𝗔𝗗 𝗜𝗧 𝗛𝗘𝗥𝗘 𝗙𝗜𝗥𝗦𝗧: A senior repeat offender was jailed again after Englewood police said he pulled a pocket knife on another man during an argument.

Melvin Dewey Maclin, 77, had prior arrests that date back to 1989, when he was charged with criminal mischief, according to state court records.

Other arrests followed on charges that included robbery, aggravated assault with a weapon and illegal drug and weapons possession in 1994, the records show.

Maclin made headlines in 2023 when authorities charged him with aggravated assault on a domestic violence victim, drug possession and weapons offenses after they said he pulled a knife on a woman. Maclin pleaded out on March 7, 2024 and apparently served no prison time.

Officers this time responded to an apartment building on West Forest Avenue on a report of a dispute around 3:30 p.m. yesterday (Aug. 4th), Detective Capt. Renee LaRaia told Independent Online News.

Maclin, they learned, "slapped the victim and pulled out a pocket knife and continued arguing," the captain said.

The officers recovered the knife and took Maclin into custody, charging him with simple assault and weapons offenses.

Maclin, a U.S.-born American citizen, remained held early this afternoon in Bergen County's jail pending a first appearance in Central Judicial Processing Court in Hackensack.

𝗨𝗣𝗗𝗔𝗧𝗘 (𝗬𝗢𝗨 𝗥𝗘𝗔𝗗 𝗜𝗧 𝗛𝗘𝗥𝗘 𝗙𝗜𝗥𝗦𝗧): A Middlesex County motorist was sentenced to a plea-bargained five months in Bergen County's jail for a perilous Carlstadt police pursuit this past winter.

Jexiel Cardona-Fumero, 22, had already compiled dozens of traffic and motor vehicle summonses as an adult -- including three for speeding -- and was involved in a prior pursuit in Sayreville in March 2024 when the incident occurred, court records show.

Uniformed Carlstadt officers activated their overhead lights when they found 50 or so motorists burning rubber and racing on private property at the east end of town around 11 p.m. Feb. 21st, Detective Kyle Torres said.

Detective Brian Monroe stopped some of the fleeing drivers at a nearby intersection, lining them up at a stop sign, Torres said at the time.

Cardona-Fumero, however, exited the single-file line and drove his 2019 BMW straight at Monroe’s vehicle, nearly hitting the driver’s side, the detective said.

Monroe alerted other units and began pursuing him.

Cardona-Fumero had a juvenile passenger with him as he “proceeded through a stop sign at the intersection of Gotham Parkway and Veterans Boulevard and continued towards Route 120,” Torres said.

He then blew a red light and raced across two lanes of traffic onto the southbound highway, the detective said.

Cardona-Fumero finally pulled over after he was cut off by Officer Matthew Smith, Torres said.

He tried to resist but was quickly subdued by Monroe and Smith, the detective said.

Police charged Cardona-Fumero with eluding and resisting arrest while issuing him 15 summonses. Then they sent him to Bergen County’s jail.

The U.S.-born American citizen spent a night in the lockup before a Superior Court judge released him pending trial.

Cardona-Fumero took a deal from prosecutors rather than risk the outcome of a trial, pleading guilty to a lesser-degree resisting arrest charge on April 21st in exchange for the five-month sentence.

Superior Court Judge Mitchell I. Steinhart had sheriff's officers return Cardona-Fumero to the Bergen County Corrections and Rehabilitation Center following his sentencing yesterday (Fri., July 31st).

His projected release date: Dec. 31, 2026.

ACCREDITATION PROGRAM - New Jersey State Association of Chiefs of Police.

During the June 9th, 2026, council meeting, Chief Thomas Greeley and Deputy Chief Matthew de la Rosa accepted the certification of accreditation from Mr. Harry Delgado, the Accreditation Program Director of the New Jersey State Association of Chiefs of Police.

This is the first accreditation in the history of the Englewood Police Department. This is result of tireless hours of work by Deputy Chief de la Rosa and Lt. Robert Occhuzzi, who were the managers of the project. Accreditation is a seal of approval from an independent agency. By being accredited, the EPD illustrates the pursuit of excellence and a willingness to meet and exceed industry standards. We would like to thank the governing body and the City Manager for their support during this long and arduous process.

A carjacker yanked an 80-year-old River Edge woman from her Jeep during a struggle in the parking lot of a Walgreens in Bergenfield on Sunday morning, then sped off with her purse before police in Teaneck captured him, authorities said.

Borough resident Jordan Rucker, 35, was carrying a knife when he was caught, Bergenfield Police Capt. William Duran said.

The victim thankfully sustained minor injuries for which she was hospitalized, the captain said.

Rucker is a familiar figure who residents say dances outside the BP station across the street from the South Washington Avenue pharmacy.

They said he first went into the Walgreens and “knocked things over” before confronting the woman in the parking lot shortly before 8:30 a.m. Sunday (May 3rd).

She refused when he demanded the keys to her 2017 Cherokee, Duran said, so Rucker “forcefully removed her from the vehicle.”

He also snatched her purse away during a struggle, the captain said.

Members of the Bergenfield Volunteer Ambulance Corps took the victim to Hackensack University Medical Center with injuries that he said weren’t threatening injuries.

Meanwhile, alerts were transmitted for the Jeep, which had headed south on Washington Avenue.

Teaneck police stopped the vehicle on East Forest Avenue and took Rucker into custody around 9:30 a.m.

He was carrying a four-inch knife, Duran said.

Rucker had prior arrests for assault in Teaneck in 2017, for aggravated assault in Little Falls in 2012 and for making terroristic threats there in 2013, criminal records show.

Bergenfield police charged him with first-degree carjacking, robbery, simple assault, making terroristic threats, theft, theft of a motor vehicle and weapons offenses.

Rucker – listed as a U.S.-born American citizen – remained held in Bergen County’s jail this morning pending a first appearance in Central Judicial Processing Court in Hackensack.
