Meet Piper!

This adorable 3-month old little kitten is ready to find her forever home!

Piper can be best described as cautiously curious. She enjoys romping around with her kitten pals, zipping through the cat room and observing from afar before planning her next move! Piper can be a little shy at first, but once she's in your arms that little purr-motor never stops.

Piper would love to find a home with adult adopters or families with cat-savvy children over the age of 10 at this time. She'd do well with another friendly kitty in the home, but it's currently unknown how she may do with a dog.

Piper is currently at the AFRP Adoption Center and would love to meet you! To schedule a one-on-one meet and greet, please submit an online adoption application.

Meet Shaggy & Velma! 🐾❤️

These two gorgeous Bernadoodles recently arrived at AFRP together, and while we’re still getting to know them, we already know they’re both very special pups! We believe Shaggy and Velma are related in some way, although they aren’t littermates. Now, each is looking for a loving family of their own who can help them settle in, learn, and discover just how wonderful life can be💛

Velma is a 1-year-old, 43-pound bundle of happy energy! She loves people, cuddles, playtime, and pretty much any opportunity to have fun with her favorite humans. She’s playful with other dogs and would love an active family ready to help her learn good manners while keeping up with her puppy-like enthusiasm. Velma is ready to become someone’s fun-loving adventure buddy. 💕

Shaggy is a 3-year-old, 57-pound sweetheart who is happiest when he’s right beside his people. He’s mellow, affectionate, and loves attention and cuddles. He’s a fan of relaxing at your feet or snuggling up for some quality time, he simply just wants to be included. He’s a great walking companion and would thrive with a family who can give him some basic training, patience, and lots of love of course! 🥰

And just look at those beautiful Bernadoodle coats! Both pups have already received a pampering and groom from their amazing foster mom, don’t they look amazing? 🤩 Their future forever families will need to be prepared for regular professional grooming to keep them looking and feeling their best.

Interested in Shaggy? Visit animalfriendsrescue.org or click the link in bio to complete an adoption application.

Velma is currently accepting applications for pre-screening. At this time, we are only responding to applicants in Monterey, Santa Cruz, and San Benito Counties.

Could one of these sweet pups be your new best friend? 🐶❤️

🐾 It takes a village, and Forrest Gump’s village showed up for him. 💜

Earlier this year, a very sweet tabby named Chivo arrived at Hitchcock Road Animal Services after being found injured in Salinas, where he was suspected to have been hit by a car. He had suffered serious injuries, including fractured femoral heads, and needed surgery that was beyond what the HRAS veterinary team could provide.

But the team at HRAS wasn’t going to give up on him. They reached out to Friends of Hitchcock Road Animal Services (FoHRAS), HRAS’s nonprofit partner, to see if they could help with the cost of the surgery. And the answer was a resounding YES! 🙌

With FoHRAS generously sponsoring Chivo’s surgery, AFRP was able to bring him into our program to recover and eventually find his forever home. It was truly a win-win, and a wonderful example of what can happen when local organizations come together for an animal in need. 💜

Chivo came to AFRP in June and underwent surgery shortly after. He ultimately only needed one femoral head repaired through an FHO procedure, and he has recovered beautifully!

Today, Chivo is Forrest Gump, and he is absolutely thriving at AFRP! He’s sweet, social, and friendly. And get this- he’s harness trained! He loves heading out for walks and exploring, and he enjoys the company of other cats, too. 🐱🐾

We’re incredibly grateful to Hitchcock Road Animal Services, Friends of Hitchcock Road Animal Services, and everyone who helped make Forrest’s journey to recovery possible. Each organization played an important role in getting this sweet boy the care he needed and giving him a second chance.

This is what community partnership looks like, and Forrest is proof of just how much we can accomplish when we work together. 💜

Interested in meeting Forrest? Visit animalfriendsrescue.org to learn more and submit an adoption application. Once approved, we’ll schedule a meet-and-greet!

💔 We don’t know how Bonnie and Clyde survived.

Some dogs come into our care and leave our staff completely heartbroken. Dogs who make you stop, and wonder how they could have been allowed to suffer this much.

Bonnie and Clyde are those dogs.

These sweet siblings arrived at AFRP yesterday from Bradshaw Animal Shelter after being found as strays in truly terrible condition. Their fur was so severely matted that it was interfering with their ability to walk and beneath those mats were fleas, ticks, and dead ticks that had been feeding on their bodies for too long.

Once they were shaved down and bathed, the full extent of their condition became painfully visible. Sweet Bonnie was severely emaciated and had it especially rough. She was covered in so many ticks that she is now anemic from the blood loss caused by the bites. She is also missing a paw on one limb, likely due to a congenital abnormality.

Seeing them this way was incredibly difficult for our team. These two have clearly endured more than they ever should have had to and yet, somehow, they are all love. ❤️

Yesterday, Bonnie and Clyde wanted nothing more than pets, hugs, affection, and to be held. They leaned into our arms and soaked up every bit of love we gave them.

How can dogs who have been through so much still have so much love to give?

We don’t know what their lives looked like before AFRP. But we know what their lives look like now, and they are finally safe. Bonnie and Clyde are now settling into loving foster homes, where they can finally rest, heal, and learn what it feels like to be cared for. 🐾❤️

Their road to recovery won’t be easy, but they will have the medical care, nourishment, comfort, and love they desperately need.

This is where their new life begins. Welcome to AFRP, Bonnie & Clyde❤️

Meet our Pet of the Week, Sophia! 🐾💛

This sweet 10-month-old pup is a playful and happy girl who has come such a long way since arriving at AFRP! Sophia came to us with her sisters we named the “Golden Girls” trio, and we believe she may be a mix of Chihuahua, Italian Greyhound, and Rat Terrier.

While Sophia was initially very shy, she has blossomed into a sweet, social girl who now warms up quickly with a gentle introduction. She loves playing with other dogs, enjoys her toys, and has a wonderful balance of independence and affection. This athletic, long-legged girl is full of playful energy and would love a family who can give her plenty of enrichment, and continued training.

Want to hear more about Sophia and what makes her such a special companion? Tune in to KRML 94.7 FM today around 3:45 PM to learn more about her! 📻🐶

We take in all kinds of dogs from shelters all over Northern California, in all sorts of conditions. Sometimes the dogs are pretty perfect and we wonder why they were even in a shelter in the first place. Sometime the dogs are sick, have injuries, are scared and fearful and just need time to rest in their foster home before they are ready for adoption.

Then there are dogs likes these two, who we saw on the "Needs Rescue" list from the Bradshaw Animal Shelter in Sacramento and we knew we had to jump into action even if it meant committing to taking them without knowing who even might be able to foster them.

Meet Bonnie and Clyde, a sibling pair of poodle mixes who came in as strays to Bradshaw a few days ago - with fur so completely matted that it was difficult for them to walk (the shelter had to shave Clyde down completely). In that matted fur was fleas and ticks, including dead ticks, that had been feeding on these poor dogs for who knows how long.

Sweet Bonnie had it a little worse than Clyde - she had so many ticks on her that she is anemic from the blood loss incurred from the tick bites. She also has a congenital abnormality: a missing a paw (although the limb is functional and she can get around).

We are transferring both of these dogs into AFRP early next week and will get them the medical treatment, nutrition, love and compassion that they both desperately need and deserve.

If you have ever considered fostering a dog for AFRP and this story tugs at your heart, please reach out to us! AFRP covers everything for you during the time you foster - you just need the heart and the home! We will cover the vet expenses, supplies you may need for your home, food, and anything else! And for sweet Bonnie, it will even include taking her to a specialist to examine that leg with the missing paw to see whether she needs a paw prosthesis or amputation.

While Bonnie and Clyde may look like outlaws right now, we know that underneath all that rough exterior, they are going to be two extremely great dogs that will make wonderful additions to someone's families in the near future!

If you are interested in fostering Bonnie or Clyde, please email us at [email protected]! If you are unable to foster but want to see how you can help support these two in other ways, you can also email us!

💙 Meet Opal, an adorable kitten with the brightest blue eyes and the sweetest little heart! 💙

At just 4 months old, Opal is as adorable as they come, and she’s ready to find the loving furever home she’s been waiting for!

When she first arrived from the San Jose Animal Center, this girl was quite shy, but with continued socialization, she has made wonderful progress and is slowly learning that people can be pretty wonderful, too. 💕

Once Opal feels comfortable, you get to see her sweet side, and once she’s in your arms, that little purr motor kicks on! She loves attention and wants nothing more than to have her person’s undivided attention. 🐾

Opal also truly blossoms when she has a playful kitty companion, so another cat in her new home is a must. She’s looking for experienced adult adopters, or an experienced family with children over 15, who will give her the patience and understanding she needs to continue coming out of her shell.

She may be tiny, but Opal has so much love waiting to be discovered. 💗

Opal is currently at the AFRP Adoption Center and would love to meet you! Public visiting hours are held Saturdays and Sundays from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m.
