As people of faith and moral conscience, we urge members of Florida's Senate Education Committee to oppose SJR 1104, a dangerous proposal that would weaken religious freedom protections for students and open the door to state-sanctioned discrimination in public schools. Misleadingly called the "Protection of Religious Expression in Public Schools," SJR 1104 would tie the hands of educators and administrators, making it harder to protect students from harassment and exclusion—particularly religious minorities, LGBTQ+ students, and young people from marginalized communities.

Our traditions teach that no one’s beliefs should be imposed by the state—and that every child deserves safety, respect, and the freedom to learn.

🇺🇸 Happy National Religious Freedom Day!

On January 16, 1786, Thomas Jefferson’s Virginia Statute For Religious Freedom, a precursor to the First Amendment, was enacted.

240 years later, white Christian Nationalists are attempting to co-opt "religious freedom" for themselves, privileging their own beliefs while suppressing everyone else's.

American Atheists is fighting back, as we have since 1963.

We believe, as Jefferson did, that: "No man shall be compelled to frequent or support any religious worship, place, or ministry whatsoever, nor shall be enforced, restrained, molested, or burdened in his body or goods, nor shall otherwise suffer on account of his religious opinions or belief, but that all men shall be free to profess, and by argument to maintain, their opinions in matters of Religion, and that the same shall in no wise diminish, enlarge or affect their civil capacities."
