On this day in history 61 years ago, President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the Voting Rights Act, one of the crown jewels of the Civil Rights Movement.

This law sought to eliminate legal barriers that prevented Black voters from fully participating in our democracy. While the tactics may have changed, anti-voting rights politicians are still trying to silence voters of color through discriminatory voting rules and racist gerrymandering that weakens their power.

No matter what, we’re committed to protecting and restoring the Voting Rights Act to ensure that everyone has a voice in our democracy.

BREAKING: The Tenth Circuit Court of Appeals protected the safety of Oklahomans by ruling the threats provision of “riot” to now require the State to prove that a person intended to threaten violence, an even higher standard than demanded by the First Amendment. Read our full statement on our website.

Four years ago, the ACLU of Oklahoma Foundation and Cornell Law School First Amendment Clinic filed a lawsuit on behalf of a group of local advocates and organizers challenging the Oklahoma Riot Statute’s definition of “riot” as unconstitutionally overbroad and vague.

Still thinking about the OKC PrideFest Parade.

Thank you to everyone who marched with us! Together, we displayed a beautiful show of solidarity and joy. This was the largest group we have ever had, and we are grateful for each and every one of you.

Because of the 120 people that marched with the ACLU of Oklahoma, we won the “Best Marchers” award from Oklahoma Pride Alliance!

We commemorate the 250th anniversary of this nation by carrying on the American tradition of dissent. Challenging those in power is woven into the very fabric of our nation. On this historic 4th of July, we’re recommitting to our defense of our most fundamental rights and freedoms, guaranteed to us in the Constitution centuries ago and all of those won since. Even through the darkest parts of our nation’s 250 years, one thing remains clear: We the people are worth fighting for.

Speaking out about government abuses is foundational to who we are as a country. We’ll keep performing our patriotic duty of speaking truth to power in defense of all of our rights.
