Dominican American Analilia Mejia elected to Congress.

Newspapers in NJ are saying that Analilia Mejia is the "first Latina to represent the 11th District in Congress, and only the second Latina to represent New Jersey in D.C." What they are not emphasizing is that she is the first Dominican American woman ever elected to Congress in the history of this country. Congratulations to her and wishing her the very best in Congress. She will be joining Adriano Espaillat, the first Dominican American man elected to Congress back in 2016.

Analilia Mejia will succeed fellow Democrat Gov. Mikie Sherrill as the 11th Congressional District’s House rep.

DAMA’s Chair had the privilege of participating in an engaging talk with Dominican-American actress, writer, and activist Julissa Calderón. She is currently appearing in the Goodman Theatre production of The Brief and Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao, where she brings Lola to life. Calderón is widely recognized for her roles in Gentefied on Netflix and With Love on Amazon.
We extend our sincere thanks to Professor Kim Potowski and the University of Illinois Chicago for hosting this meaningful conversation.

Yesterday, what an unforgettable night of experiencing humor, family conflict with its attendant infighting, and the despair of an unattained love that borders on universality—all accompanied by the provocative irony of Oscar Wao perhaps enduring an eternal virginity. Add to this the existential dynamic of the immigrant, transformed by his US experience in a way that wounds his Dominican identity and culture, and we find the inevitable need to sign up to see the play The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao. Register it in your calendar before April 12th. And when you are ready to go, use the code DAMA to receive a 25% discount, and the service fee will be waived. Don’t miss it!
