Styles 4 Kidz We are a nonprofit organization whose mission is to provide culturally affirming textured hair care services and education for Black children.

We serve a variety of families including transracial adoptive, foster, Black & biracial families. Styles 4 Kidz provides children and families with professional tips, tools, and a little TLC to make caring for African-American hair a FUN, not stressful, experience.

Exceptional leadership drives long-term institutional sustainability.

Meet Alex Cornwell, a valued member of the Styles4Kidz local board who joined the mission to advance equity and help construct sustainable community systems. Right now, she is driving strategic planning efforts for the “Building Crowns 4 The Future” Fall Gala, curating an exclusive silent auction experience to create powerful new pathways for engagement.

“I joined the board because Styles 4 Kidz has been an invaluable resource for my family, and I want to support its continued growth to reach more and more transracial foster and adoptive families. The resources, education, and community building that S4K provides is needed to ensure that every child feels connected to their culture and identity and wears their textured hair like a crown. Tamekia and her team are amazing, and I want to do everything I can to support them.”

100% of adoption agencies surveyed said the same thing: They need textured-hair care education for their families. 💈✨

S4K Founder Tamekia Swint recently traveled to Washington, D.C., for the National Adoption Conference, where Styles 4 Kidz hosted a booth sponsored by Jockey Being Family and connected with more than 20 adoption and foster care agencies from across the country.

While every agency expressed a deep desire to support transracial adoptive and foster parents, one clear gap remained: access to practical, culturally confident hair care education and resources.

That’s why Styles 4 Kidz exists - to equip families, empower kids, and bridge the gap through hands-on education, salon services, and online resources. 💙

This month we're reading “Don't Touch My Hair” by Sharee Miller (Coily and Cute ):

This book tells the story of Aria, a confident girl who loves her hair (the kind of kid we’re cultivating here at Styles 4 Kidz). To avoid people touching her hair without asking, she takes increasingly extreme measures that end with her alone on an island. Feeling isolated, she returns to society. Rather than continuing to use avoidance, she establishes a firm boundary: you have to ask first and respect her decision.

We appreciate this book for several reasons. First, we love Aria’s self-esteem; she knows, without a doubt, that her hair is beautiful. Miller also uses playful, imaginative scenarios to keep kids interested in the story while attacking the micro-aggression (the unwanted behavior) rather than any particular group of people. Through Aria, Miller also demonstrates for kids the appropriate course of action–the old, “show, don't tell.”

Miller has authored/illustrated several other books of interest to the Styles 4 Kidz community, such as “Princess Hair.”
