Remembering David P. Sherman, Norwich YMCA Executive Director 1988 to October 26, 1996
It is hard to believe that thirty years have passed. In so many ways, it still feels like yesterday.
On October 26, 1996, we said goodbye far too soon to our YMCA leader, colleague, and friend, David P. Sherman, who passed away unexpectedly while serving as Executive Director of the Norwich Family YMCA.
Coming to Norwich from Worcester, Massachusetts, Dave led our YMCA from 1988 until his passing in 1996. During those years, he invested in our programs, our facilities, our members, and our community. He even helped lay the groundwork for what would eventually become our current YMCA facility, and was instrumental in bringing the Gus Macker tournament to Norwich.
But Dave's impact reached well beyond the walls of the YMCA. He gave his time and talents to community organizations, his church, and coaching, while remaining deeply committed to what mattered most, his family.
Thirty years later, his influence is still felt throughout our YMCA and the community he served. The work he began, the people he inspired, and the foundation he helped build continue to shape who we are today.
We still miss Dave on the basketball court as it was a “Go big or go home!” moment. A gentle giant with a competitive spirit, who knew how to play the game.
Thirty years have passed, but the moments, the memories, and the impact of Dave's life remain with us.

We miss you, Dave. We remember you with gratitude, and we continue to build upon the legacy you left behind.
Forever remembered. Never forgotten.
