Happy Sunday!! Here is a reminder from your Norwich Firefighters to help us protect our community with fire safety. Tomorrow starts the NYS burn ban until May 14th. This means no open burning unless it is a small, contained camp fire. Preferably covered in a enclosed fire pit to prevent spreading. The good news, with the beautiful weather that we have been experiencing lately, you can still cook out on a grill. However, we ask that you do not burn yard debris or have bonfires. Fires can quickly spread out of control into grass and wooded areas. This also means to be mindful of smoking materials and ensuring they are disposed of properly as they can cause a fire if they are tossed into grass and brush piles. A simple grass fire can grow rapidly and create a much larger fire and even sometimes cause buildings to catch causing extensive damage and potentially displacing members of the public from their homes. As a reminder, if you see an unattended fire or something that appears to be out of control, do not hesitate to call. As the old phrase goes, if you see something, say something. Stay safe and enjoy the spring weather responsibly.

Yesterday’s duty crew made an appearance at the Norwich Family YMCA for a small presentation to talk about fire prevention and to show our protective equipment that keeps us safe in fires. One of our many missions is educating the public on fire safety, that includes our young generations. It’s never to early to teach our youth to stay safe. Thank you to the YMCA for having us.

Press Release:

Norwich, NY

This evening, Saturday February 14, 2026 at 5:24 p.m. Norwich firefighters were alerted by the Chenango County Communications Center for an odor of smoke at 125 East Main Street. The duty crew arrived on scene within minutes of dispatch and reported no visible smoke or flames showing. Crews then entered the building to search for source, where they encountered a heavy smoke condition in the third floor hallway and requested a "Box" alarm assignment indicating a working fire. Crews deployed hose lines into the building while simultaneously searching for the source of the fire. Crews located the fire apartment and began fire suppression along with a search for any potential victims. Crews were able to extinguish the main body of fire and determined the apartment was free of occupants at the time of the incident.
Additional off duty and volunteer firefighters arrived on scene and assisted with checking for fire extension along with the removal of occupants from adjacent apartments.
The fire was extinguished in approximately 10 minutes with crews remaining on scene for approximately 30 minutes to assist with salvage and overhaul and fire investigation.
The fire was confined to one apartment. The fire apartment suffered smoke, water, and heat damage. Other apartments suffered minor water damage.

The fire is still under investigation and appears to have started in the kitchen area.
