NYS Department of Environmental Conservation
The northern snakehead (Channa argus) is an invasive, predatory fish species native to Asia and prohibited in New York State.
✅ This unique fish can breathe air and survive for days out of water.
✅ Once established, these formidable predators have the potential to change aquatic ecosystems by outcompeting top predators, including sportfish, and eating our native fish species.
✅ Identifying a northern snakehead can be tricky as they can be confused with bowfin and burbot, both native to New York. They can be distinguished by their long, thin body, flattened head, and a single dorsal (top) fin running the length of their backs. They also tend to have a more pronounced blotchy pattern along their sides.
✅ Northern snakehead are currently found in the Delaware River, Bashakill Wildlife Management Area and several lakes and ponds on Long Island where they were likely introduced by aquarium releases or intentional stocking for fishing purposes.

Today, TU President and CEO Chris Wood joined Senator Martin Heinrich and Senator Ron Wyden on the Hill to defend the Roadless Rule.
“If you hunt and fish, roadless areas are the most valuable landscapes we have in America. One statistic that absolutely blew me away when we were developing the roadless rule: These lands represent 2 percent of the American landscape, and 25 percent of all of our threatened and endangered species find habitat in them. And don’t forget that these landscapes are high elevation landscapes, very low timber values, very expensive to get up into, often with very erosive soils,” said Wood. “Records show that a lack of roads has not stopped fire prevention measures. Lack of roads in inventoried roadless areas has neither prevented fuel treatment nor led to substantially more fire. Today, 80 percent of all fires are started by people, and 80 percent of all fires are started within a half a mile of a road. The idea that we would overturn the roadless rule, it defies economic, ecological, and common sense.”

America’s roadless areas are under attack from all sides, including from the Administration, in the House of Representatives, and now the Senate. On June 10th, a last-minute amendment to repeal the Roadless Rule was added to legislation and advanced...

The Salmon River in Oswego County, NY, is known for its world-class salmon and trout fishery, surrounded by beautiful public access sites for all to enjoy. Unfortunately, it is also home to roughly 357,000 invasive sea lamprey larvae.
To remove these larvae, sea lamprey control agents from Fisheries and Oceans Canada will treat the Salmon River system with lampricide (TFM) between 5/27/26 and 5/29/26. Lampricide will be applied from the Lighthouse Hill Reservoir Dam for approximately 12 hours, then continue downstream for about 22 miles to Lake Ontario. The system was last treated in 2023.
Without treatment, many of these larvae will soon become parasitic and migrate into the lake, where each can kill up to 40 pounds of fish by feeding on their blood and body fluids.
Lampricide is applied at very low concentrations (parts per million), though limited effects on sensitive non-target aquatic species may occur. Fishing and other recreational activities remain safe during treatment.
