Today, we honor Juneteenth and the enduring pursuit of freedom, dignity, and opportunity for all.

At Open Doors, we believe that every person deserves the stability, respect, and support needed to thrive. As we reflect on the significance of this day, we are reminded that building stronger communities means ensuring that everyone has access to opportunity, a place to call home, and the chance to create a brighter future.

Together, we continue the work of creating a community where every person is valued, empowered, and able to move forward with hope.

Please note that in observance of Juneteenth, the Pantry, Community Closet, Economic Opportunity Hub, and The Social will be closed today. Our Shelter and Kitchen will continue operating as normal.

In May, participants in The Social enjoyed a full month of engaging, hands-on activities designed to build skills, connection, and joy.

Highlights included rock climbing (thank you to Rock Climb Fairfield for hosting us), equine therapy (thank you to The Serenity Project for this meaningful experience), guitar lessons with Josh, and cooking sessions with Chef Terano Higgs.

These activities are led both by staff and community partners who generously share their time, talents, and passions. Whether it’s learning a new skill, trying something creative, or simply spending time together, each session helps strengthen relationships between participants and staff while building confidence and connection within the group.

The Social is a structured enrichment program for individuals experiencing sheltered and unsheltered homelessness, as well as former shelter guests, offering daily opportunities for learning, engagement, and community building.

🧡 We’re grateful to the New Canaan Rotary Club for their generous support!

This grant will help us purchase new griddles for our kitchen, allowing our team to prepare fresh breakfast items like pancakes instead of relying on pre-made options.

This upgrade will make a meaningful difference in the meals we’re able to serve each day.

Have rising housing costs impacted you, someone you know, or your business? We'd love to hear your perspective.

We encourage you to take a few minutes to read this important article about the growing homelessness crisis in Connecticut.

For those of us in Fairfield County, this conversation is especially important. While our region is often known for its wealth, it is also one of the most expensive places to live in the country. As housing costs continue to rise, more individuals, families, older adults, and even full-time workers are struggling to afford a place to call home. Homelessness in Fairfield County increased significantly in recent years, reflecting a crisis that is affecting communities across our state.

At Open Doors, we see the impact of this housing crisis every day. This article is a powerful reminder that homelessness is not a personal failure, it is often the result of a housing market that has become out of reach for too many people.

Read the article and learn more about why investing in affordable housing, shelter, and supportive services matters now more than ever.

'In Greater New Haven alone, more than 500 people are sleeping outdoors because there are not enough places indoors for them to be. It is not a choice.'
