: “I'm Mia. I'm 14 years old. I started playing violin when I was five, almost six, and I joined NYS in the middle of COVID, when I was in 4th grade. When I got the news that I was the Principal Orchestra Concerto Competition winner I was surprised. I didn't expect to win at all. I think I did well, but I think I could have done better. I think you can always do better.
“Before I play in an audition, I just try to not overthink it because if I don't overthink it, then I don't get super nervous. I just think, I'll go on there and try my best. Whatever happens, happens. If I mess up, it'll be okay. I just try to go out there and have fun. I did feel comfortable playing on the stage where I rehearse with NYS every week. It's really great that my dad could accompany me on the piano for my audition. I'm really lucky.
“I started learning my audition piece this past summer at Bowdoin International Music Festival in Maine. The teacher I was working with there thought that Vieuxtemps’ Violin Concerto No. 5 would be a really good fit and suit the style I play. In the summer, I was definitely practicing more. I would try four-plus hours a day, but during the school year when I have more homework, I try to aim for two hours on the weekdays and a little more on the weekends.
“It's been months since I started learning this piece, so I've worked a bunch on it. At this stage, it's just about trying to polish it, add character, and make the audience feel the music. I just want the audience to have fun. It'll be fun for me as well to play with the orchestra and have my friends playing next to me.”
