Thank you to everyone who joined us for AWARE’s June General Meeting! 💙

It was an evening of connection, collaboration, and celebration as we reflected on recent accomplishments and looked ahead to exciting initiatives that continue to strengthen our community.

One highlight of the evening was recognizing our graduating 1Life students. These dedicated young leaders were honored with certificates and gifts as they prepare for their next chapter in college. We are incredibly proud of their commitment to prevention, leadership, and service, and we can’t wait to see all they accomplish in the years ahead. 🎓✨

Attendees also heard updates on several recent and upcoming AWARE initiatives, including the successful Golf Ball Cleanup conducted in partnership with the National Audubon Society at Crab Meadow Golf Course, as well as the launch of our new Anti-Vaping Awareness Campaign with the Town of Huntington. As part of this effort, “Please Do Not Vape” awareness stickers will soon be displayed in restrooms at Town of Huntington parks and beaches to help promote healthier, vape-free public spaces.

Thank you to everyone who attended and continues to support AWARE’s mission of preventing substance misuse, promoting mental wellness, and strengthening our community through education and outreach.

🗓️ Save the date! Our next General Meeting will be held on July 15. We hope to see you there!

As prom night and graduation season approach, it’s important for parents and caregivers to understand Suffolk County’s Social Host Law and the role adults play in helping keep teens safe.

The Social Host Law holds adults over the age of 18 accountable for knowingly allowing underage drinking on property they own, rent, or control — even if they did not provide the alcohol. The law exists to help prevent dangerous situations involving underage drinking, impaired driving, alcohol poisoning, and other substance-related risks.

A few important reminders ahead of prom and graduation season:

➡️ Know where your teen is and who they’re with
➡️ Communicate clear expectations before the night begins
➡️ Encourage teens to call a trusted adult if they ever feel unsafe
➡️ Never allow underage drinking or substance use at gatherings in your home

Keeping our community safe starts with awareness, communication, and prevention.

Healthy coping skills can make a meaningful difference in a young person’s mental and emotional wellbeing 💙

As youth navigate stress, anxiety, peer pressure, school responsibilities, and everyday challenges, having healthy outlets can help them process emotions and build resilience in positive ways.

Simple coping strategies like exercise, journaling, music, mindfulness, spending time outdoors, creativity, counseling, and peer support can help reduce stress, encourage self-expression, strengthen emotional regulation, and build connection.

Encouraging open conversations about mental health and helping young people develop healthy coping tools early on can support long-term wellbeing and reduce the risk of unhealthy coping behaviors, including substance misuse and opioid use later in life.

New Anti-Vaping Awareness Campaign Launches in Town of Huntington Parks & Beaches 🚭

AWARE Drug & Alcohol Community Coalition is proud to partner with the Town of Huntington to launch a new public awareness campaign aimed at reducing youth va**ng and promoting healthier community spaces.

Beginning this month, “Please Do Not Vape” awareness stickers will be displayed in restroom facilities at Town of Huntington parks and beaches as a reminder of the health risks associated with va**ng and the importance of maintaining vape-free public spaces.

"Sometimes the most effective prevention message is the most straightforward one. These stickers serve as a visible reminder that va**ng is not harmless and that our community values healthy, vape-free environments. We are grateful to the Town of Huntington for their partnership and for helping normalize vape-free spaces throughout our community." — Linda Oristano, Executive Director, AWARE Drug & Alcohol Community Coalition

Thank you to the Town of Huntington for working with us on this important initiative.
