SUPPORT A WORTHY CAUSE as The Magic Penny Inc. tries to raise $15,000 this Giving Tuesday!!

Donate Today @ https://www.paypal.com/us/fundraiser/charity/1290394

Giving Tuesday 2025 is here! The Magic Penny Inc. is inviting you to join us in our mission to change the lives of the people in the Kagboro Chiefdom. Our organization was founded with the goal of creating a tangible change in the lives of residents living in an underdeveloped, coastal area of Sierra Leone.

For two decades, we have dedicated our efforts to creating a better quality of life for the villagers and their children. Most significant is our ever growing school campus, currently with three stand-alone buildings, a garden, sports field and teacher's quarters.

As well as new projects, we also plan to repaint buildings, and make general repairs. Since this is a tropical region, there are six months of torrential rains which lead to washed out conditions, leaks, fading paint etc. Desks and benches suffer wear and tear and we hope to raise funds to help us carry out these improvements.

SUPPORT OUR CLASSROOM PROJECT!!

Donate Today to help us replace desks and benches!!!

As stated above with the passage of time, the desks and benches in the classrooms are in desperate need of replacement. We need to hire local carpenters to craft new sets for all our classrooms. Your donations will enable us to make sure the children are using equipment that is safe and sturdy. This will ensure they are in an environment that will enhance their productivity and desire to learn.

Lighting up young lives with your help! Bring Solar Power to our classrooms!! Donate Today to bring solar power to our students!!

The Magic Penny Inc. has recently installed solar lights around the school campus. In the evenings, the students bring desks and benches outside and hold study halls under the lights. Our next big project is to provide solar lighting in ALL our classrooms as well as the teacher's living quarters. We especially need solar lights and power in our computer lab located in the new classroom building. This lab will introduce our students to a whole new world, allowing them to have access to the internet at their fingertips.

In an area with no electricity, our students use kerosene lamps to study which is a huge strain on the eyes. Teachers have no options but to use these same lamps to grade homework. Better lighting for completing all their school tasks, would go a long way to helping both groups achieve their goals. With your donations, we can make this a reality for them! Please help us brighten up their lives!!

A couple of our teachers helping students cross a man made bridge to get to school. These "bridges", made of fallen palm tree trunks is a very common sight in the region. There is little to no infrastructure so the locals use their ingenuity to build these across the area. Most of the roads/paths are unpaved, but our students still make the trek every day to get their education.

Bompehtoke is located on the South Western coast of Sierra Leone, therefore the terrain is very sandy. During the rainy season, moving from one place to another can be treacherous due to flooding, fallen bridges etc.. There is no public transportation and most people get around on foot. This is just one of the many obstacles faced by people living in rural areas.

Students looking sharp, ready for class. While some parents can afford shoes and socks to complete the school uniform, many still walk to school barefooted. This shows the resilience and determination of our students who come every day despite their lack of basic necessities in order to get an education which could change their and their families' lives.

When we first began our mission at The Magic Penny our main focus was on providing consistent academic education to the children of Bompehtoke and surrounding areas. At the time there was no one stable place for children to learn and get the education necessary to have a future outside of the village. Their only options were to stay in their villages and follow in the steps of their parents, farming and fishing for a living. But we also understood the importance of having them learn sustainability and carrying on the tradition of knowing how to grow your own food and make the best use of the land available. We especially did not want them to undermine the occupations of those who till the land and whose jobs were not necessarily based on an academic education.
We portioned off a part of the area on the school grounds for a fenced off garden (to protect it from foraging animals) and the teachers and students are responsible for its maintenance. The students also engage in weekly upkeep activities, clearing out the surrounding areas by weeding and tending the school grounds under adult supervision. It is our hope that on top of what they are learning in the classroom -as children living in a rural area far from grocery stores etc.- they also understand the value of being able to live off the land. Thanks to the support of our donors we hope to continue our goal of providing a better future for the children of the Kagboro Chiefdom. Thank you all.

Days for girls: Girls in many African countries stay home from school when they are having their period. To make sure that they attend school on their ‘days’ Magic Penny would like to invest in Days for Girls kits. We gave some samples to a few girls last year and this is what one of them said after trying hers. “The kit gives me freedom. I am very comfortable at school especially around boys. I can now go to school without worrying about accidents.”
