I hope all who have ever appreciated having a local partner of American Atheists here on Long Island will take the time to read this.
Long Island Atheists is dying. It's a slow, painful death, but it's dying nonetheless. Where as we used to hold a meeting or sponsor an event every week and get 20 attendees for each one, we now hold one or two a month and get maybe five attendees. One big problem with this situation is that our only source of income is the donations that attendees bring to the meetings. So while our income has nearly dried up, our dues to Meetup.com and our semiannual PO box renewal keep going up. There are now insufficient funds in our checking account to cover the next charge for Meetup dues -- which means we will lose our Meetup membership.
You may ask why, as president, I am not doing more to ameliorate this problem. I agreed to step in as interim president for a maximum of two years or until a new election could be held. That was six years ago. It is long past time for someone else with more free time and more energy to take over the reins. But no one thus far has declared their desire to be considered for becoming our next president.
So I will continue to operate as president of LIA for the next two to three months or until someone steps forward, whichever comes first. If no one has expressed any interest in being president by the end of that period, I will step down and close the group for good. The small amount of money left in the group's account at that point will be donated to American Atheists.
