I hope all who have ever appreciated having a local partner of American Atheists here on Long Island will take the time to read this.

Long Island Atheists is dying. It's a slow, painful death, but it's dying nonetheless. Where as we used to hold a meeting or sponsor an event every week and get 20 attendees for each one, we now hold one or two a month and get maybe five attendees. One big problem with this situation is that our only source of income is the donations that attendees bring to the meetings. So while our income has nearly dried up, our dues to Meetup.com and our semiannual PO box renewal keep going up. There are now insufficient funds in our checking account to cover the next charge for Meetup dues -- which means we will lose our Meetup membership.

You may ask why, as president, I am not doing more to ameliorate this problem. I agreed to step in as interim president for a maximum of two years or until a new election could be held. That was six years ago. It is long past time for someone else with more free time and more energy to take over the reins. But no one thus far has declared their desire to be considered for becoming our next president.

So I will continue to operate as president of LIA for the next two to three months or until someone steps forward, whichever comes first. If no one has expressed any interest in being president by the end of that period, I will step down and close the group for good. The small amount of money left in the group's account at that point will be donated to American Atheists.

Find Meetup events, join groups, or start your own. Make new friends and connect with like-minded people. Meet people near you who share your interests.

Our long-time members may remember a young woman from Bangladesh named Zerin Firoze, who came to speak to our group at the Plainview Library in 2018 (back when we used to hold Friday Forums there). She is an outspoken atheist who fled her home country after her life was threatened many times (including a near fatal attack by her father that fractured her skull), and who came to the U.S. seeking asylum. It has taken nearly 10 years for the Department of Immigration to grant her an asylum interview, which is now scheduled for next month. She is terrified again, because a number of other asylum seekers have been arrested by ICE and deported when they showed up for their scheduled interviews. She currently lives in a rented room in California, about 2 hours from Los Angeles.

She invites atheists everywhere to visit and subscribe to her YouTube channel, Bengali Atheists. The asylum application process has also left her nearly destitute, and she is soliciting donations to her Asylum Legal Fund through gofund.me: https://www.gofundme.com/f/support-zerins-asylum-legal-fund

I will be writing a letter to Immigration in support of her application for asylum in my capacities as a licensed physician and President of Long Island Atheists.

My name is Zerin Firoze, and I have been an outspoken Ex-Muslim and atheist activist in… Zerin Firoze needs your support for Support Zerin's Asylum Legal Fund

I am personally recommending that all who are able to do so participate in the Secular Seven Launch on Wed Feb 25 at 8:00 PM. It is a Zoom event that launches the candidacies of seven entirely secular political leaders who are dedicated to fighting the rising influence of Christian nationalism. I am not scheduling Drinking With Atheists this month, which would have occurred on Wed Feb 25, to allow our members and me to participate in the CFE Secular Seven Launch Zoom Event on 2/25 at 8 PM. I think this an important event that anyone in the secular community who is not otherwise occupied should join.

If there is enough interest, we’ll try for another Drinking With Atheists the last Wednesday in March.

I must apologize to the members of LI Atheists for getting my calendar confused and forgetting to either host or cancel the monthly meeting at the diner this past Friday. I usually get a reminder from Meetup about a previously scheduled event, but did not receive one this time. I was in Pennsylvania for another commitment and should have cancelled in advance. Nevertheless, I thank Jim Lewin for stepping up to host this meeting. Unfortunately, I must cancel the upcoming scheduled Drinking with Atheists for the same reason — I will away attending a conference. We’ll resume regular meeetibgs in November.
