It is with great pride that we announce that last night, our Cpl Christopher G Scherer Semper Fi Fund President and Chris’ dad, Tim Scherer, was a recipient of the 2026 Vigiano Hope & Courage Award from Hope For The Warriors.

Since 2010, the Vigiano Family Hope & Courage Awards have honored service members and military families who embody both hope and courage in the face of extraordinary circumstances. In 2014, the award was renamed in tribute to Captain John Vigiano, Sr., retired FDNY, and his wife Jan, who gave both of their sons on 9/11, one a firefighter and the other a police officer. The Vigiano family’s legacy of service, sacrifice, and continued dedication to supporting service members and military families serves as an inspiration to us all.

It is an especially great honor to receive this award from Hope For The Warriors, an organization that truly embodies the meaning of family. Since its founding in 2006, Hope For The Warriors has worked tirelessly to enhance the quality of life for post 9/11 service members, veterans, military families, and families of the fallen. Through programs supporting financial wellness, physical and emotional health, community connection, and the critical transition to civilian life, the organization has become a trusted source of care and hope for the military community.

Like the Vigiano family, Tim turned profound grief into a powerful calling. After his son Chris was killed in action, Tim made the choice to honor his sacrifice not only with remembrance, but with action. Through heartbreak, he found purpose in carrying on his son’s legacy of loyalty, courage, and service. What began as simple care packages sent to deployed troops soon grew into something far greater. Through Team Chris, Tim has created a lasting mission to stand beside our military community by sponsoring veteran service dogs, granting Warrior Wishes, and awarding scholarships to local seniors who demonstrate loyalty and a commitment to service. His connection with Hope For The Warriors grew naturally through his work founding the Suffolk County Veterans Run Series, bringing together local races on Long Island in support of veterans and their families. What started from loss has become a living legacy of hope.

This award is not only a recognition of Tim’s devotion, but also a reflection of the unwavering support of our community. Together, we keep Chris’ legacy alive and continue to stand beside our veterans and their families. 🇺🇸

“Now, we have inscribed a new memory alongside those others. It’s a memory of tragedy and shock, of loss and mourning. But not only of loss and mourning. It’s also a memory of bravery and self-sacrifice, and the love that lays down its life for a friend–even a friend whose name it never knew."
- President George W. Bush
Team Chris remembers all those who were lost on 9/11/01 and the families they left behind. We will never forget. With heavy hearts, we send our thoughts and prayers to the families of Lt. Ronald Kerwin, Patrick O'Shea and Officer Andrew Jordan.

Today marks eighteen years since we lost our inspiration, our hero, Cpl Christopher G. Scherer. On July 21, 2007, Chris made the ultimate sacrifice for our country. He was felled by a single bullet from the gun of an enemy sniper. Chris died doing what he loved. He died protecting our freedom. His service and sacrifice will never be forgotten. We are forever proud. Tonight, we will raise a Guinness to a life well lived. Sláinte! Thank you to all those who help us keep Chris’ memory alive.
