At Slate School, every week is filled with deep, curiosity-driven learning. Interested in learning more? Register For our Upper School (Grades 7-12) Tour & Info Session on Wednesday, June 3, at 4:00pm: https://slateschool.org/tours-and-information-sessions

Here’s some of what our 7th graders have been doing at Slate Upper School during the past few days:
*Studied World War II from multiple perspectives, including influential figures, the Pacific Theater, and the experiences of civilians through historical fiction and storytelling projects.
*Researched, wrote, edited, peer-reviewed, and practiced presenting projects, reflections, and Moth-style eyewitness narratives.
*Explored themes from Hans Rosling's book Factfulness, discussing cognitive biases and multiple perspectives related to current events.
*Took a field trip to Harlem to explore its history, culture, music, poetry, and art.
*Created jazz-inspired artwork and studied patterns in art and nature, including the work of M.C. Escher.

One of our 8th graders received an award today from the Connecticut Invention Convention for his invention, the SafeRelease Helmet. He earned the Push For Entrepreneurship Sports and Fitness Award, a "Best in Show" honor presented to an inventor whose innovation promotes fitness, exercise, healthy living, and the entrepreneurial spirit of Push For Entrepreneurship. The SafeRelease Helmet is designed to reduce cervical spine movement during the emergency removal of a sports helmet, helping improve athlete safety. We are proud of his creativity, dedication, and commitment to solving real-world problems.

Hamden news!

Our 7th and 8th grade students thoroughly enjoyed a Zoom conversation on Friday with the voice of the Boston Red Sox, Joe Castiglione. He announced 42 seasons of the Boston Red Sox, and students heard about his experience being inducted into the Hall of Fame, his advice for our young students, as well as his thoughts about recent rule changes to baseball. We also heard about how he's a Hamden native!

Our students studied the continent of Africa this Spring. On Tuesday, our Grade 3-6 students gathered for a Zoom conversation with 4th and 5th grade students from The Ubuntu School in South Africa. They asked each other questions and learned about each other's lives, languages, favorite foods, and customs. It was a remarkable conversation and the start of a friendship, with many future collaborations and conversations to come.

At Slate Upper School, students don’t just follow experiments. They design their own!

With educator guidance, our 7th and 8th grade students developed and pursued their own experimental procedures using Petri dishes to quantify bacteria and yeast growth. Student-designed research questions included investigating bacteria growth before and after using various citrus fruits as disinfectants, comparing the impact of canned versus fresh pineapple on yeast growth, identifying whether washing fruit with water reduces bacteria, and many more creative experiments designed by each student.

Over the past few weeks, students conducted background research and carefully wrote detailed procedures. Today, they officially implemented their protocols and began collecting data.

Over the coming days, students will continue monitoring their Petri dishes, recording observations, and analyzing results. We can’t wait to see the conclusions they reach through their own scientific inquiry!
