Buona Festa della Repubblica! 🇮🇹

On this very day, in 1946, the Italian people went to the polls. For the first time after 20 years of Fascism, after World War II had largely destroyed the country, the Italian people had an important choice to make: “Monarchia” or “Repubblica”? Women were also allowed to vote, for the first time in Italian history, and so they did.

Credit is usually given to Alcide De Gasperi for the remarkably consequential decision to call the entire population to a vote on such a huge and controversial issue. The choice was “Repubblica” by a close margin, and King Umberto II went into exile.

It’s an Italian bank holiday (festa nazionale) and cities nationwide celebrate with parades, flying the “tricolore” and in Rome the “Frecce Tricolori” perform a flyover the city. Be sure to wish all your Italian family and friends, “Buona Festa della Repubblica!” 🇮🇹

It is Super Bowl Sunday and at the end of today's game, one team will go home with the coveted, Vince Lombardi Trophy, named after the legendary Italian American NFL coach. 🏈🏆

Lombardi was born in 1913, in Brooklyn to immigrants from Salerno, Italy. Lombardi and his siblings faced intense discrimination, outside of their neighborhood, due to their Italian background. Church was a large part of family life growing up, with Sundays reserved for attending Mass, followed by a lengthy dinner amongst family and friends afterward.

In 1933, Lombardi accepted a football scholarship to play for the Fordham University Rams. After graduating from Fordham in 1937, the Great Depression led to few if any career paths for Lombardi. He would accept an assistant coaching job in 1939 at St. Cecilia High School in New Jersey and also become a teacher at the school. Lombardi would take over as head coach of the school in 1942, leading the school to become one of the top football teams in the nation.

In 1948, Lombardi took an assistant coaching job with West Point’s football team that would serve as the major influence on his coaching style. An assisting coaching job with the New York Giants would follow, but it was his time with the Green Bay Packers that would cement Lombardi’s name forever as the greatest football coach in NFL history.

Taking on a dismal looking Packers team that lacked motivation, Lombardi exhibited his famous never quit attitude and leadership to lead them to five NFL Championships and the first two Super Bowl Championships.

Lombardi passed way in 1970 from cancer and in 1971 the Super Bowl trophy was presented from there on out as the Vince Lombardi Trophy. Aside from the trophy, his name lives on in the memorable quotes he has left on motivation, work ethic and life for countless generations to come.

Happy International Family Day! 🇮🇹

Family is one of the most important aspects of Italian and Italian American life; everything Italians do centers around La Famiglia (the family) from meals to work to free time. A common phrase Italians use is "La Famiglia è Tutto", which translates to "Family is Everything".

What is your favorite Italian family tradition?

Buon Compleanno, Italia! Happy 163rd Birthday, Italy!

On this day, March 17, in 1861, King Vittorio Emanuele II (1820-1878) of Sardinia became the first King of united Italy since the 6th century.

Born in Turin as the eldest son of Charles Albert, Prince of Carignano, and Maria Theresa of Austria, he fought in the First Italian War of Independence (1848-49) before being made King of Piedmont-Sardinia following his father's abdication. He appointed Camillo Benso, Count of Cavour, as his Prime Minister, and he consolidated his position by suppressing the republican left.

Vittorio Emanuele supported the Expedition of the Thousand (1860–1861) led by Giuseppe Garibaldi, which resulted in the rapid fall of the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies in Southern Italy. However, Victor Emmanuel halted Garibaldi when he appeared ready to attack Rome, still under the Papal States, as it was under French protection. In 1860, Tuscany, Modena, Parma and Romagna decided to side with Sardinia-Piedmont, and Vittorio Emanuele then marched victoriously in the Marche and Umbria after the victorious battle of Castelfidardo over the Papal forces. He subsequently met Garibaldi at Teano, receiving from him the control of southern Italy and becoming the first King of Italy.

In 1866, the Third Italian War of Independence allowed Italy to annex Veneto. In 1870, Victor Emmanuel also took advantage of the Prussian victory over France in the Franco-Prussian War to taking over the Papal States after the French withdrew. He entered Rome on September 20, 1870 and set up the new capital there on July 2, 1871. He died in Rome in 1878, and was buried in the Pantheon.

The Italian national Vittorio Emanuele II monument in Rome, containing the Altare della Patria, was built in his honor.

And so March 17, 1861 marks the birthdate of the modern day Italy that we know today.

Buona Festa della Donna - Happy International Women's Day! In Italy, women receive a yellow mimosa flower. The flowers serve as a token of appreciation and as an expression of female solidarity. In 1945 the Union of Italian Women declared March 8 a special holiday to celebrate womanhood across the country.

Also across the country, many bars and restaurants offer special pricing and menus for women and flower stands selling mimosa flowers are set up around the cities. Auguri a tutte le donne!
