This morning, our fourth and fifth graders continued a Norfolk Collegiate tradition by pledging to uphold the Honor Code.

Before signing their names to the pledge, students reflected with Mrs. Kathy Garris, lower school dean, on the values of honesty, integrity and character. Together, they read "I Promise" by LeBron James, discussed how the Honor Code is a promise to do their own work and put its words into their own voices.

They also talked about something just as important: mistakes. Mistakes are a natural part of learning and growing. What matters is taking responsibility, learning from them and having the courage to reset and try again.

Mrs. Garris, a sports fan, offered a fitting metaphor: You have to be more willing to strike out than you are to hit — and that's OK. What matters is learning from the experience, resetting and trying again.

Then came the meaningful moment: students signed their names to a commitment to live out these values each day.

Our third graders watched, knowing their turn to join this tradition comes next year.

Way to go, Oaks! Your signatures are your promises, and we’re proud of the character, courage and integrity you’re building every day.

Shoutout to Reilly Gallagher '22...From Norfolk Collegiate to the fashion scene in New York City!

Reilly Gallagher is an assistant buyer at Rent the Runway, where she works with the designer buying team to select merchandise based on consumer trends and data. Her role takes her to New York Fashion Week and markets each season, where she negotiates with vendors and collaborates across teams to make sure renters have the styles for which they’re looking.

“The coolest part of my job is the fact I get to work closely with vendors across the globe, especially in Paris!”

Reilly earned her bachelor's in Fashion Merchandising from High Point University, and she has some great advice for anyone hoping to break into the fashion industry:

“Don’t count yourself out of roles that feel like a stretch and talk to everyone you meet. Some of my best connections have come from the most random of places, and you always are more qualified than you may feel!”

We couldn’t agree more.

👉 Alumni, we’d love to hear from you! Share your updates, news and life’s journeys with us. Reach out to Amanda Bryer, associate director of development and alumni engagement, at [email protected].

At today’s Convocation, Upper School English Teacher Ashleigh Lassiter challenged our students to think about authenticity — and the unexpected ways life shapes us into the people and leaders we are meant to become.

Leadership doesn’t always arrive when we expect it. Learning doesn’t always happen the way we planned. Sometimes, life simply deals us a hand we didn’t see coming. And it’s through those experiences — the challenges, the lessons, the relationships and the unexpected turns — that we discover more of our authentic selves.

When introducing Ashleigh as our 2026 Convocation speaker, Head of School Jonathan Day shared what makes her such a special part of our community:

“She represents many of the qualities we value: kind, thoughtful and very funny. This is the place where she feels she has done and will continue to do the best work of her life, where she has built and will continue to build some of the best relationships of her career — and perhaps her life. She loves her work and the people she gets to do it with, both her students and her colleagues.”

We couldn’t agree more. We’re incredibly fortunate to have teachers who care deeply about their work, their students and the people who make up our Oak community.

And today, we were fortunate to hear from one of them.
