Today, Norfolk Collegiate is closed in observance of Juneteenth, also known as Emancipation Day.

Observed annually on June 19, Juneteenth commemorates the day in 1865 when Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, and informed enslaved African Americans of their freedom—more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued.

Juneteenth is a celebration of freedom, resilience, culture and community. It is also an opportunity to reflect on our nation's history and continue learning from it.

Did you know? The color red is often associated with Juneteenth and symbolizes strength, sacrifice and resilience. The Juneteenth flag, featured here, was designed in 1997 by Ben Haith and represents a new beginning and the enduring promise of freedom for all Americans.

You can learn more about Juneteenth by visiting the National Museum of African American History and Culture's website, https://nmaahc.si.edu/juneteenth

Rain? ✔
Chilly weather? ✔
Making a difference? Absolutely.

Today we're throwing it back to when our Oak Ambassadors rolled up their sleeves for Clean the Bay Day! Despite the less-than-perfect forecast, our students showed up ready to serve, helping remove trash and make our community a little cleaner and a lot brighter.

We're proud of these Oaks for living out what it means to be responsible citizens—rain boots and all! 💙

A special thank you to Mrs. James for organizing the event, our parent volunteers for helping lead groups throughout the event and to Mrs. Corey coming out to supporting our students. Your time and dedication helped make the morning a success!

Big congratulations to our Grade 5 LEGO Robotics team for earning second place overall at the STEM Fair hosted by Christopher Newport University!

Shoutout to teammates Aarav P., Jameson B., Eva H. and Jackson M. for their outstanding work and teamwork throughout the competition.

A special thank you to middle school FIRST LEGO League teammates Noah B. and Gideon H., along with Coach Skip Morrow, for volunteering their time, sharing their expertise and supporting the team along the way.

As part of the lower school's LEGO Robotics enrichment, these young engineers spent their afternoons this spring designing, building and programming robots while learning to solve missions together as a team.

We're so proud of their creativity, perseverance and collaboration. Way to go, Oaks!

to an unforgettable day of hands-on science at the Virginia Living Museum!

During a "Phyla Facts" lab, students investigated the classification of squid by examining their defining characteristics and exploring the unique adaptations that help them survive. Through a squid dissection, they compared squid to other mollusks and invertebrate phyla, bringing classroom learning to life through real-world observation and discovery.

The learning didn't stop there! Students also enjoyed a self-guided tour of the museum, getting up close with sharks, otters, jellyfish, sea turtles and many other fascinating creatures.

Experiences like these spark curiosity, encourage critical thinking and remind us that some of the best learning happens when students can explore, question and discover firsthand.
