In Salem, Oregon, Indigenous leader Hannah Shooting Bear pushed back against a proposed data center campus that has raised concerns about water, energy and environmental impacts on land that is significant to tribal communities.

The project was developed under a non-disclosure agreement between the city and developer Verrus, keeping plans largely out of public view until July 2026. That secrecy became a central point of anger for residents, particularly as questions emerge around tribal rights and who should be consulted when major infrastructure is proposed on land with Indigenous significance.

At a packed City Council meeting, Hannah Shooting Bear and other residents challenged not only the environmental costs of the project, but the process that brought it forward.

Meet the feminist punk band that led the Riot Grrrl movement 🎸

In 1990, three Evergreen College students named Kathleen Hanna, Tobi Vail, and Kathi Wilcox teamed up to publish a feminist fanzine called “Bikini Kill.” Determined to bring their feminist agenda to life, they turned Bikini Kill into a punk band with Hanna as the singer-songwriter, Vail as the drummer, and Wilcox playing bass, and recruited guitarist Billy Boredom to join them. The band started touring in 1991, traveling across the United States, Europe, Australia, and Japan to perform their politically charged feminist rock music.

Bikini Kill is known for starting the Riot Grrrl movement of the ‘90s with its political lyrics, bold performances, and feminist ideals. The band broke barriers for women in the male-dominated indie rock scene, fueling the rise of women in rock by calling for “Revolution Girl Style Now” and even inviting female audience members to openly voice their experiences with s*xual assault on the microphone at shows.

Bikini Kill’s legacy in the music industry lives on to this day. They challenged the misogyny in the music industry and in our political systems, educated others through their music and zines, and used their tours to build an underground network between girls who made music. Bikini Kill’s mission was to encourage other women and girls to start bands as a form of resistance against patriarchy, and their legacy has led the way for more feminist voices to be heard in the music industry and beyond.

“Just leave” ignores the legal, financial and structural barriers that can stand between wanting to leave and actually being able to do it. We need to stop asking why women didn’t leave, and start asking what makes leaving possible in the first place.

The high-profile case of Lindsay Clancy has turned public attention to the urgent issue of postpartum mental health, including postpartum depression and psychosis. A question repeatedly raised by women who have bravely shared their own experiences is: why do we only talk about postpartum psychosis in the wake of the most horrific tragedies?

If we had a more collective understanding of what can happen after birth, the risk factors to look out for, the warning signs of postpartum mental health crises and how to support new parents, we could build a stronger system of care around them. That understanding could help more families recognize when something is wrong, seek help sooner and, ultimately, save lives.

While not a exhaustive look at postpartum, this is our starting point. If theres something you’d like us to look at, cover or get answered - let us know in the comments.

We mourn the passing of Hayden Panettiere, an actress many of us grew up watching, and a woman who spent her career pushing back against the idea that women have to be easy to understand.

From Heroes to Nashville and beyond, Hayden brought complexity to the women she played. Her characters were messy, ambitious, vulnerable, angry, funny and deeply human. As her career evolved, she refused to be typecast, seeking out roles that challenged the narrow ways women are so often written and understood.

Off screen, Hayden spoke publicly about the reality of motherhood and challenged the idea that motherhood has to look one particular way. Her story showed the world that you can love your child deeply and still struggle to bond with them; that postpartum depression can make you feel profoundly unlike yourself; that being a mother does not mean being endlessly self-sacrificing or getting everything right; and that loving your child sometimes means making the hardest choice you can.

Her openness gave visibility to struggles like addiction, postpartum depression, surviving s*xual assault, complicated motherhood, grief and recovery that too often linger at the fringes. She was open about her pain and in doing so, helped make space for other women to speak honestly about theirs.

While we’ll remember Hayden for the characters she made unforgettable, we’ll also honor her for the vulnerability with which she shared her own story, and by continuing to advocate for all survivors and anyone who has ever fought to recover.

Rest in Peace, Hayden 🤍

José Antonio Kast’s government is fast-tracking a bill that would mean survivors of domestic and gender-based violence could face criminal proceedings if their initial report is dismissed and authorities allege it was false.

‼️ The proposal is alarming because a dismissed domestic violence case does not mean a report was fabricated. ‼️

Gender-based violence often happens without witnesses, and survivors can already face significant barriers to proving what happened.

The bill comes as Kast’s government moves to roll back reproductive protections, while similar efforts targeting alleged false reports are gaining ground elsewhere in Latin America.

What is happening in Chile is part of a wider political shift with parties running on economic stability polices but once in power introducing laws that make life more dangerous for women, girls and other marginalized groups.
