The Farm Bill decides who eats and who doesn’t. It decides whose water is clean and whose family keeps its land.

In the newly published op-ed “The Farm Bill Is a Health Bill,” Kenya Crumel, co-lead of America the Beautiful for All’s Legacy Lands Workgroup and director of the Black Land and Power Workgroup at the National Black Food & Justice Alliance, and Lorette Picciano, executive director of the Rural Coalition, argue that food security, clean water, and land retention are not separate issues. They land on the same families, in the same communities, generation after generation.

The Senate marks up the Farm Bill in the coming days. We are watching.

We are watching for whether:
⚠️Congress reverses the SNAP cuts that have already pushed 4.5 million people off food assistance.
⚠️Conservation programs get the funding and the staff to actually reach farmers.
⚠️Heirs’ property protections keep family land in family hands.
⚠️Tribal nations are consulted before decisions about their lands are made, not after.

Our ocean belongs to all of us.

In stewardship of our shared ocean, Shantha Ready Alonso and Miriam Goldstein, Executive Directors of the America the Beautiful for All Coalition and the National Ocean Protection Coalition, write in this op-ed published in Common Dreams :

“We should be spending America’s 250th anniversary lifting up our shared natural and cultural heritage. Instead, the Trump administration is spending this consequential year by selling out nature on land and sea.”

Last week, June 24 to 26, our Legacy Lands Workgroup gathered at Pearlstone Retreat Center. Farmers, ranchers, tribal stewards, and advocates, the people who keep our lands and the people working to protect them, came together for three days.

This workgroup exists to secure land access and stewardship for Black, Indigenous, and underrepresented communities. The convening brought us together to name what we know, listen to what we don’t yet understand, and shape an action plan rooted in the people doing the work.

We talked about the Farm Bill and who it actually serves. About millions of acres of heirs’ property at risk. About tribal sovereignty and what it means to consult, not just invite. About land back as more than a slogan.

Aaron Mintzes joined Earthworks in 2011 to belong to a community-centered organization that seeks to repair the world. Earthworks checks those boxes for him!

Earthworks stands with communities on the frontlines of mining and oil and gas extraction, fighting to transform federal policy and secure communities’ rights to approve or deny projects that affect their land and health.

Aaron serves as Deputy Policy Director and assists the Earthworks team in transforming federal mining policy. He lives in Baltimore with his family, where he volunteers for local environmental groups and cheers for the Orioles.

Ingrid Lyons’ love for the outdoors was sparked by the vivid contrast between the hustle and bustle of New York City and the peaceful beauty of the Boundary Waters. Starting at just four years old, she made annual trips with her family from the city to Ely, Minnesota, where she fell in love with nature.

These days, Ingrid serves as the Executive Director of Save the Boundary Waters, a campaign protecting the most visited wilderness in the United States. She leads the fight against Twin Metals, a copper-sulfide mining project owned by the Chilean conglomerate Antofagasta, whose proposed mine sits upstream of the Boundary Waters and threatens to send acid mine drainage into its interconnected lakes and rivers.
