At JBS USA, the facilities that prioritized childcare now have the lowest turnover rates in the company. That's an employee investment worth celebrating.

Their SVP of Public Policy and Government Affairs, Karla Thieman, shared how supporting employees with childcare helped JBS tackle high turnover and keep its workforce strong.

This is the kind of employer leadership our Foundational Workers Report calls for. Foundational workers make up roughly 80% of the U.S. workforce, and employers who invest in childcare see it pay back in retention, attendance, and loyalty.

Surprising no one: women can’t catch a break.

New federal data shows 7 million fewer women than men have access to paid leave. Much of that gap comes down to who works hourly and part-time jobs, the roles that offer flexibility but rarely pay you to step away. Women hold more of those jobs, and even within them, they’re less likely than men to get paid time off.

Our Foundational Workers Report with analysis from found the same story from another angle. The shift workers who keep this country running are disproportionately moms, the very people who need paid leave most.

When your kid spikes a fever or your mom needs a ride to the doctor, flexibility without pay means choosing between your family and your paycheck. No mom should have to make that call.

The hardest thing for moms to ask for? Help.

Not because we do not need it. Because we have been made to feel like needing it means we have failed.

Eight years ago, our CMO Deborah applied for paid leave from her newborn daughter’s NICU bedside. She should have been holding her baby or healing herself. Instead, she was wading through a government website.

She’s far from alone. 3 in 5 eligible parents never claim the state paid leave benefits they’ve already paid into, because the process is so hard to navigate. That’s why we built PaidLeave.AI, which has now helped 250,000+ parents understand and access their benefits. One New York mom used it to claim $12,000 she didn’t know she had.

At Demo Day, Deborah shared what’s next. With GitLab Foundation’s support, we’re growing PaidLeave.AI into a family benefits navigator that helps parents access WIC, SNAP, and child care subsidies alongside paid leave. Our New York and New Jersey pilot has already reached 82,000 parents. 💛
