Burn Book entry #3: Hempstead Resource Recovery Facility (Reworld Hempstead) – USA - is a giant ashtray in New York. And even worse, that ash is dumped in a landfill near a predominantly Black and Latino community in North Bellport. Last year the state fined Reworld for nearly a decade of historic violations in ash-management practices.

The next entry in our Burn Book is the biggest climate emitter in this list: Runcorn Energy Recovery Facility (ERF) – United Kingdom.

Financed in part by the European Investment Bank (EIB) which claims to prioritize sustainability in its investments, the plant emitted approx. 1.11 million MT of CO2 last year.

For the next 4 days, we will be releasing fact sheets detailing the problems with "waste-to-energy" incinerators around the world.

First up is Attero Moerdijk Facility from the Netherlands, an expensive waste trap!

This facility tied the municipality into a contract requiring 510,000 MT of waste annually. But when the city's improved waste separation reduced material sent to the incinerator, it had to pay the company $17 million USD-- a penalty for not being wasteful enough! This example shows how incinerator contracts can undermine municipal efforts to reduce waste.

Our new publication, The Burn Book: Incinerators that Threaten the Climate, Public Health, and Our Finances, exposes the facts behind the harms of waste burning.

⚠︎ These incinerators alone produce at least 1.7 million tons of toxic ash per year– or the weight of 230 Eiffel Towers.
🚨The 11 plants with GHG emissions data release a cumulative 5.5 million metric tons of CO2e per year, same as 1.3 million passenger cars.
💸The twenty incinerators profiled have racked up nearly $7 billion of investments to date-- a portion directly from taxpayers.

As the global race for critical minerals accelerates, communities are asking: Who benefits, who bears the costs, and whose voices shape the transition? These questions are at the heart of the struggle against greenwashing and extractive models being repackaged as “green” development.

Forum Network is joining the Global Week of Action: People Rising for Justice and Liberation, happening 12–18 October 2026 in Bangkok, Thailand, to amplify these voices and demand a transition rooted in justice, people’s rights, and ecological protection.

✊🏽 Join us as we challenge extractive development and stand for a just and people-centered future.

Chagua Taka Sifuri. Pinga uchomaji wa taka.

A world is possible when we rethink how we manage resources and reject solutions that turn waste into pollution.

At Nipe Fagio, we are advancing alternatives to incineration through our Zero Waste approach, which prioritises waste prevention, source separation, reuse, recycling, and composting. Through community-based Zero Waste systems, we work with communities, local governments, and waste collectors to recover valuable materials, transform organic waste into compost, create green jobs, and reduce the amount of waste sent to dumpsites and landfills.

We believe in systems that prevent waste, keep resources in circulation, protect public health, and promote environmental justice.

We are joining Global Alliance for Incinerator Alternatives (GAIA), In solidarity with communities worldwide working towards a world without incineration.

Join the movement. Choose Zero Waste. Stop incineration.
