The Jazz Generations Initiative is a new, immersive program that will unite, preserve, and celebrate the vibrant jazz scenes of New York and New Orleans through interdisciplinary and intergenerational performances, events, a multimedia publication, educational initiatives, a jazz studies scholarship and residency programs.

2026 Jazz Cohort Fellow Aurora has been making the rounds in Brooklyn this summer, including this beautiful sunset performance with The End Trio at Brooklyn Americana Music’s Sounds at Sunset series in Brooklyn Bridge Park.⁠

Tonight, she joins an incredible lineup featuring Tim Berne, Craig Taborn, Tom Rainey, and Aliya Ultan t for an experimental jazz session at Lowlands Bar in NYC.⁠

One of the things we love most about working in both New Orleans and New York is getting to follow artists as they move between these musical communities, carrying ideas, collaborations, and sounds with them 🤩⁠

Exploring the sounds that exist beyond the surface 🎷🌿⁠

As a June Artist in Residence, Diane spent two weeks exploring the connections between gravitational wave astronomy and deep ecological listening, recording low-frequency vibrations throughout Bulbancha with a geophone and developing new works along the way.⁠

At the residency’s works-in-progress concert, those experiments took shape through saxophone, zither, voice, and breath, with JGI Jazz Cohort member Steve Lands joining Diane in performance.⁠

More than a century after her birth, Frida Kahlo's work continues to resonate because she transformed personal experience into powerful visual language. Through symbolism, nature, and uncompromising honesty, her paintings made pain, joy, identity, and resilience visible.⁠
⁠
This Saturday, artist Amy Bryan invites participants to explore those same ideas in a community portrait workshop inspired by Kahlo's practice. Using flowers, animals, and meaningful objects, you'll create a symbolic self-portrait that reflects your own story.⁠
