Culture For One

Culture for One transforms the lives of NYC children in foster care through the power of the arts.

Culture for One is a New York City based non-profit dedicated to providing cultural excursions to children living in the foster care system. Through outings to plays and musicals, dance performances, museums, concerts, and companies involved in cultural production, Culture for One seeks to bring inspiring experiences to children who otherwise would not have access to them. Each outing not only inc

ludes a cultural experience, but also a meal and a time of group reflection to give thought to how the excursion may resonate with and inspire the children. Culture for One also sponsors children who have demonstrated a particular interest by sending them to workshops and classes in that field. In the past and ongoing, children have had the opportunity to study at the Teen Academy at the International Center of Photography, drawing classes at the Arts Students League, and guitar lessons at the Mannes College of Music, to name a few.

Meet Amara! Amara, who is now 10 years old, first joined Culture for One on a Cultural Excursion to see “Elf: The Musical” two years ago. Since then, she and her mother have become treasured members of our community! Amara has taken multiple classes through our Arts Scholarships program and she has come along on nearly a dozen Cultural Excursions.

Who doesn’t love a puppet-making workshop? Museum of Arts and Design hosted a “Whimsical Puppets” Workshop. Thank you to MAD, and specifically to Lydia Brawner, Deputy Director of Education at MAD, for creating engaging opportunities for the children and families in the Culture for One community 🧡
