The Co-op School

The Co-op School The Co-op School is a student-centered and parent-aided cooperative preschool, elementary, and middl The Board of Trustees is comprised of elected parents.

The Co-op School was founded in 2003 by a group of parents who saw the need for a high-quality and affordable preschool option in the Clinton Hill and Fort Greene neighborhoods. Since then, the Co-op School has matured from a small, parent-run playgroup to a fully staffed and licensed non-profit school. The Co-op School is a parent-aided organization for which “cooperative” means just that: students’ families are responsible for the development, fundraising, and maintenance of the school. Parents share the responsibility of upholding the school’s guiding principles, facilitated through the elected Board. With the staff, parents, and student body, we continuously work towards our ultimate goal of blending community and education, with special attention to honoring our differences. After residing in two prior homes in Clinton Hill, The Co-op School moved into 87 Irving Place in the fall of 2009. In 2011, The Co-op School launched the first kindergarten class of its elementary program at 40 Brevoort Place. In 2019, we opened our doors at 644 Gates Avenue in the Bedford Stuyvesant neighborhood—in a 3,500-square-foot building with double-height gym, a rooftop library, and two playgrounds—housing our preschool, elementary, and middle school students under one roof for joyful learning.

This week in Inquiry, as part of our identity study, our first graders looked closely at their own faces (the shape of their eyes, the color of their skin, the details in their hair, the curve of their smiles, and everything that makes them them) and used mirrors to draw self-portraits.

We think they turned out pretty amazing, and our first graders agreed as they shared their work and complimented one another!

What’s happening in Lower School Science lately? 🔬🧫

Kindergarten: Our youngest meteorologists learned to describe the weather (temperature, sky, rain or snow, and wind), read a real thermometer, and drew today’s weather, right down to what they wore to school!

1st Grade: Students modeled Earth spinning on its tilted axis and orbiting the Sun, then felt the “seasons” by moving their hands closer to and farther from a heat lamp. Ask them how long one trip around the Sun takes!

2nd Grade: As part of their Earth’s Features unit, students studied topographic maps and designed maps of imaginary lands full of mountains, rivers, and lakes.

3rd Grade: Working in pairs, students built and tested their own anemometers to measure wind speed. Next week, every scientist gets to build one of their own!

4th Grade: Graham cracker plates + chocolate frosting magma = a delicious way to explore convergent, divergent, and transform plate boundaries!

Every family who has walked through our doors has left something behind: a tradition, a friendship, a question that turned into a whole unit of study. 💚 🌳🐦

Today, we have alumni at LaGuardia, Saint Ann’s, Brooklyn Tech, Brooklyn Friends, and beyond. Many of the teachers who knew them are still here, and Co-op keeps growing.
Our 25th anniversary is two years away, and we’re celebrating the road there with Celebrating 25 Years of Brilliance. Over the next 25 months, we hope to raise $2.5 million to sustain family access, strengthen the systems behind our community, and open new doors for the next generation of learners.

What does success feel like? 💚🌳🐦

To us, it’s knowing that the care and commitment we pour into this school are truly felt by our students and families, every single day.

Last week, we gathered at Von King Park for our annual Sunset Soirée, bringing together new and returning families, alumni, staff, and all the vibrant energy that makes our community so special. 💚🌳🐦🧺🍕
The sun was a little shy, but it was still a beautiful reminder of what it means to be rooted in joy.

Thank you to everyone who joined us, and a special thank you to our Sunset Soirée Team for bringing it all together. What a wonderful time!

Our middle schoolers spent the day at Boundless Adventures in Purchase, NY! Students from different MS grades cheered each other on, offered a hand (and plenty of support) on tricky elements, and celebrated every success together. It was wonderful to see them come together as one community, and we’re so proud of how they showed up for one another. A big thank you to our middle school teachers and team for such a great day and for being right there encouraging every step of the way. From start to finish, there were smiles all around!

Today we kicked off our Hispanic Heritage Month celebration with a performance by Ballet Hispánico, America’s leading Latino dance organization! Ballet Hispánico New York

The looks on our students’ faces said it all. The music, the movement, the bright colors and beautiful costumes filled the room with so much energy. And it wasn’t just the kids dancing and cheering. Our staff was spotted clapping along and moving to the rhythm too, turning the morning into a true celebration of culture, community, and joy.

This experience was made possible by a very special donation in honor of Edgar Hurst and Antonia Cruz Mercado, Elie’s Puerto Rican grandparents, who loved to dance and did it with their whole hearts. We’re so grateful to carry their joy forward with our students.

Thank you, Ballet Hispánico, for sharing your art with our community. ¡Gracias!
