This Disability Pride month we celebrate the 36th anniversary of the American’s with Disabilities Act a major civil rights law protecting people with disabilities from discrimination. IDDO is proud to just one of many organizations protecting the rights of New Yorkers with disabilities.

IDDO advocates so that New Yorkers with intellectual and developmental disabilities can live independent, fulfilling lives.

Read about how IDDO worked with Christopher* to get an OPWDD housing subsidy so he could afford to rent an apartment on his own.

Christopher is an OPWDD participant who has self-direction. He had been trying since January 2025 to amend his budget so that he could get the OPWDD housing subsidy to help him afford an apartment of his own. He was living with his parents. However it had been 9 months and he had not received any news. Christopher contacted IDDO and IDDO helped Christopher identify a contact at the OPWDD Regional Office. The Regional Office answered promptly and shared that there had been an error in the budget amendment and worked with Christopher and his broker and Fiscal intermediary to fix it. Christopher was successfully able to move into his own apartment and takes a lot of pride in being able to pay his own rent.
