German American Partnership Program - GAPP

German American Partnership Program - GAPP GAPP is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that supports transatlantic student exchanges between the US & Germany. Department of State.

We open hearts, minds, and borders by enabling cultural exchanges between schools and students. Since 1972, the German American Partnership Program (GAPP) supports short-term educational exchanges. Annually, more than 4,000 American and 5,000 German students go abroad with a GAPP exchange. Stays of three to four weeks help students to build confidence and independence, gain first-hand experience of another culture, discover shared values, and form what often become life-long friendships. Our belief is that when travel is paired with community, truly incredible things can happen. GAPP is based on sustainable, long-term partnerships between schools. This makes GAPP one of the few truly bilateral student exchange programs. We work not only to bring students together with host families, but also to build lasting partnerships with schools and the wider community. GAPP is supported by the German government as well as the U.S. In the US, the program is implemented by GAPP, Inc., a 501(3)(c) located at the Goethe-Institut New York. In Germany, GAPP is implemented by the Pädagogische Austauschdienst (PAD) of the Kultusministerkonferenz der Länder.

Hallo_Future!

Next stop for the GAPP team and Gappy 😉: the beautiful Pacific Northwest!

In Portland, Oregon, together with Mark Luecht, Karla Marzinek, Doris Oldenburg and fabulous team of the German American Society of Portland, we hosted 200 high school students, their GAPP coordinators, local universities, and industry leaders to talk about the future opportunities of learning another language and going abroad. 🇩🇪🇺🇸

Two of our favorite takeaways from this day:

💪 Perseverance pays off!
❓ Instead of “Why German?”
➡️ “Because of German!”

We are immensely grateful to the German American Society of Portland for their generous $25,000 gift, which will go entirely toward supporting students and teachers from Oregon traveling with GAPP to Germany in 2027 🙏✈️

📢 The application portal for funding support opens November 1 on our website. Link in bio!

Thank you to Blake Peters, Nial Tilson, Christine Walker, Liz Secor, Tammy Stanley, Ewa Lancaster, Tanja Langer, Alexander Burdyn, Lili Blum, Jan Beck, Lynn Ries, and all the amazing students for coming, connecting, and sharing your experiences.

Hi, I’m Elif! As a Transatlantic UA Ruhr Fellow, I’m spending the next few months supporting GAPP with social media, website development, and school outreach. Since I also work as a language teacher in Germany, I’m especially happy to learn more about exchange programs from a different perspective.

I also host a weekly Conversation Hour every Monday from 5–6 PM at the library. You’re always welcome to join! 🌼🌼

Here’s a little look at my first month with GAPP(y)! 🕊️

✈️ Gappy goes Germany! ✈️

Our mascot Gappy packed the bags again and traveled like our students — all around Germany! 🌍 Gappy visited some pretty cool places in these photos — but do you know exactly where? 👀

Swipe through and guess where Gappy has been! Drop your guesses in the comments ⬇️

And right at the end, there’s a highlight you don’t want to miss: Gappy can actually fly! 🕊️✨

One thing’s for sure: travelling makes Gappy: Happy! 😄

🎥 Thank you to Herr Beattie and the Transatlantic Career-Fellow for the great recordings!
