Imagine writing letters to someone for eight years before ever meeting them!

That's what Christine and her mentor, Naomi, did. Christine was a high school girl in Kenya with big potential and few people to show her what was possible. Naomi wrote back, year after year, through high school, college, and graduation.

That's the heart of our High School Mentorship & Scholarships Program in Kenya.

For 20 years, Global Give Back Circle has supported at-risk girls in Kenya with education, mentorship, and workforce-readiness skills. More than 2,700 young women have completed college through this support, and we partner with five high schools serving underserved girls.

On June 23, 2018, Global Give Back Circle mentor, Naomi Lanoi, met her mentee Faustina Christine Wangari for the very first time ever. After eight years of exchanging letters, they were thrilled to finally meet in person.

What happens when a young woman finds her voice? 🎤

She gains the confidence to speak up, ask questions, make her own choices, and shape her future.

This happens at HER Lab, a post-high-school skills training and mentorship program for rural young women aged 18 to 35 years in Kajiado and West Pokot Counties, Kenya.

Participants are gaining hands-on technical skills alongside communication and leadership skills. Guided by mentors who walk the journey with them, they are working toward dignified and fulfilling work through employment, entrepreneurship, or further education pathways.

A new journey begins for 400 young women joining HER Lab Kajiado, Kenya.

This is Global Give Back Circle's post high school workforce readiness and economic empowerment program.

Over the next year, participants will gain technical skills, build confidence, and be paired with a dedicated mentor as they move toward employment and entrepreneurship pathways.

We're proud to walk this journey with them, alongside our grassroots community partner Helga Kajiado, and with technical support from Circle Group.

For 8years, Alphiner cooked for other families while her high school certificate sat out of reach over an unpaid fee balance.

In that time, she also became a mother.

In December 2025, she walked into an office and asked for help. Her results were found, digitized, and finally hers.

Today she is a participant at HER Lab Kajiado, Kenya, studying Food and Beverage Service and currently doing her internship.

She puts what she has learned better than we could: "A certificate can be delayed. A skill, once you have it, cannot be taken back from you."

For 20 years, Global Give Back Circle's high school mentorship and scholarship program has provided girls in Kenya with mentorship, life skills training, and financial support, removing the barriers standing between them and their potential.

Meet Mercy Akiru, HER Lab West Pokot, Kenya Cosmetology graduate, who found her voice through mentorship.

The firstborn of eight from Turkana County, Mercy got a scholarship through HER Lab West Pokot that opened the door.

But it was her mentor who changed what she did with the opportunity.

The weekly calls, someone checking in and listening, and a lesson she still carries: "If it is a no, it is a no. If it is a yes, it is a yes. Do not be swayed."

Every job she has held has come from a call she made herself, because somewhere along the way, a mentor taught her she was allowed to answer for herself.

86% of African refugees never leave the continent. They are hosted right here.

Our Founder and CEO, Linda Latsko Lockhart, asks the question host countries can't avoid: do they have what they need to help refugees rebuild locally, with dignity and opportunity?

In partnership with Mastercard Foundation, young refugee women are training at HER Lab West Pokot and Kajiado, Kenya, in hands-on skills, building their future, not just surviving displacement.

This is refugee empowerment and economic inclusion in practice.
