🧵 CMS's new report examines the barriers that slowed workforce integration and what policymakers can learn moving forward.

Between 2022 and 2025, NYC welcomed 239,200 asylum seekers seeking safety and stability. As of July 2024, we estimate about 112,000 asylum seekers were living in the city.

Most asylum seekers were of working age, and nearly 40% of those over 25 had attended at least some college. Yet they participated in the labor force at much lower rates than other undocumented New Yorkers.

Why?
Federal work authorization delays, language barriers, childcare needs, housing instability, and difficulties navigating complex legal processes all stood in the way.
