Some of the most meaningful forms of solidarity begin by bearing witness to one another.

Last Wednesday, we gathered with artist Tania Bruguera and Reverend Juan Carlos Ruiz for “We Keep Us Safe: Sanctuary as Collective Practice,” the latest program in our “Toward Sanctuary” series.

Throughout the evening, participants listened to powerful testimonies from community members navigating the realities of immigration to the United States, and heard reflections from organizers with the New Sanctuary Movement and collaborators of Tania Bruguera’s Immigrant Movement International–a 2011 Creative Time and Queens Museum project.

Tania Bruguera and Reverend Juan Carlos Ruiz challenged us to imagine sanctuary as an active practice. Together, we reflected on how artists, grassroots organizing, and collective action can create spaces of support and protection in times of uncertainty.

Thank you to everyone who shared their stories, experiences, and presence. 🫂🤝
