(RHAP) is a free arts tutoring and mentoring program in Red Hook, Brooklyn. We offer free classes and tutoring in the visual arts and music on the weekends and free homework help to our art and music students Monday through Thursday. RHAP is funded by charitable contributions. All of our tutors are volunteers - sharing their knowledge and experience from their hearts. RHAP's purpose is to provide Red Hook children and youth who have a serious interest in the arts with the opportunity to develop their self-esteem and creative powers through the development of their artistic skills and an ongoing mentor relationship. We believe that mentoring built on a shared interest in and love for an art form creates a deep bond between mentors and students and builds a strong community of support within our organization. RHAP is made up of students between the ages of 8 and 17 years old and volunteer mentors (professional artists, arts administrators and parents). RHAP has helped our oldest students (the First Generation) apply to colleges (one is at SUNY-Oswega and another is headed to SUNY-FIT in the fall of 2015) and to prepare portfolios with which they have gained acceptance at the Fiorello LaGuardia School of the Arts, the High School of Art and Design, the Edward R. Murrow High School, the Brooklyn High School of the Arts and the Freedom Academy of Brooklyn – all prestigious high schools with special programs in the arts. We believe that it is very important to keep our working groups small and ongoing - based on a sports team model - to ensure that the students and volunteer tutors can develop a real mentoring relationship. RHAP is always in need of financial contributions, donated supplies and volunteer help. If you are interested in helping us out, please contact us at our email: [email protected]

At the Red Hook Art Project, art is all about collaboration, imagination, and giving our young artists the freedom to express themselves!

One of our talented artists sketched out these beautiful faces, and our younger students brought them to life with their own colorful touches!

From bold hairstyles to vibrant colors and unique personalities, each student added a little piece of their creativity, turning every sketch into a one-of-a-kind masterpiece!

This is what we love about RHAP! Creating opportunities for our young people to learn from one another, explore their imagination, and build confidence through art.

Different ages. Different talents. One creative community!

Today at the Red Hook Art Project, our young artists rolled up their sleeves and brought their imaginations to life through SCULPTURE MAKING!

From colorful creatures and playful characters to food-inspired creations and imaginative designs, each student created something uniquely their own!

With the guidance, encouragement, and hands-on support of our dedicated teaching artists, students explored new techniques, experimented with materials, and transformed their creative ideas into amazing works of art.

Our teaching artists do more than teach artistic skills. They nurture creativity, build confidence, inspire curiosity, and create a supportive environment where every young person feels empowered to express themselves.

At RHAP, we believe the creative process is just as important as the finished masterpiece. Every sculpture tells a story, every idea matters, and every young artist deserves the opportunity to shine!

A special shoutout to our incredible teaching artists for their patience, passion, and commitment to helping our young artists discover the power of their imaginations!

Picture Perfect Memories, Handmade with Love!

Today at the Red Hook Art Project, we're turning special moments into beautiful works of art!

Our young artists explored the art of Polaroid photography and handmade picture frames, using colorful felt materials to design and decorate their very own creations!

From cutting out flowers to layering colors, shapes, and patterns, our students learned that creativity can transform something as simple as a photograph into a meaningful keepsake.

With the guidance and hands-on support of our amazing teaching artists, students practiced their fine motor skills, explored textures, and discovered new ways to express their individuality.

What makes this project so special is that every frame is different, just like the young artists who created them!

At RHAP, we believe art is about more than creating something beautiful. It's about capturing memories, building confidence, learning new skills, and giving young people the freedom to express themselves.

And the best part? These little masterpieces are memories they can treasure for years to come!

WELCOME TO RED HOOK, BROOKLYN!

A community rich in art, culture, history, creativity, and pride!

Over the past few years, our talented young artists at the Red Hook Art Project (RHAP) have had the incredible opportunity to leave their creative mark at the Brooklyn Cruise Terminal through this beautiful mural celebrating the community we call home!

This mural is more than just artwork. It's a tribute to Red Hook, its people, its history, and everything that makes our waterfront community so special.

From our local businesses and waterfront to our arts, culture, public housing, and the incredible people who make this neighborhood what it is, every image tells a piece of our story.

As thousands of visitors arrive at the Red Hook Brooklyn Cruise Terminal, we want them to see more than just a place where ships dock. We want them to see RED HOOK! We hope this mural inspires visitors to explore our neighborhood, support our small businesses, visit our cultural spaces, connect with our community, and experience everything Red Hook has to offer.

Most importantly, we're proud that our young artists have helped create something that welcomes the world into their neighborhood while reminding them that their voices, creativity, and contributions matter.

This is what happens when we give young people the opportunity to use art to celebrate their community and take ownership of the spaces around them.

Art saves lives. Art builds community. And art belongs in every space!

Welcome to Red Hook where creativity lives and community matters!

Through Their Lens!

Our students created wearable pretend cameras using recycled and everyday art materials, then headed outdoors to “capture” photos of one another and our Executive Director.

This fun activity was about more than making art it was about storytelling, perspective, and youth voice. Through their own lens, our young artists explored how they can capture moments, tell their stories, and speak their truth to power.

Because every young person deserves the opportunity to tell their story through their own lens.

WELCOME BACK, RHAP ARTISTS!

Today, we officially welcomed our students back to the table as we kick off the final art-making session of 2026!

And trust us… we have SO MUCH in store for them!

From new art projects and creative experiments to meaningful conversations, mentorship, collaboration, and opportunities to explore new tools and ideas we’re ready to CREATE, LEARN, GROW, and have some fun together.

There’s something special about seeing our young people walk back through our doors, sit around the table, reconnect with one another, and allow their creativity to take over.

We’re closing out 2026 with BIG IDEAS, BIG IMAGINATIONS, and BIG ENERGY!

Welcome back, RHAP family. Let’s make some ART!

Something special is taking shape at RHAP!

We are officially working on our next window installation to close out the 2026 calendar year!

Our Emerging Artists are transforming everyday materials into their own interpretation of a Red Hook, Brooklyn cityscape building, painting, experimenting, and bringing our neighborhood to life one piece at a time.

This is what we love about the creative process an idea starts small, and then our young artists make it bigger than we imagined.

Stay tuned as this window comes together. We can’t wait for the community to see the finished installation!

THIS IS WHAT IT’S ALL ABOUT!

We had the opportunity to experience an incredible art fair that brought together artists from all over the world, making art accessible and creating space for so many different voices, styles, and stories.

But what made this experience even more special for us was seeing our own community represented!

One of our RHAP students, Sashia, had her artwork showcased alongside so many talented artists and right there with her was Shelby, one of our Red Hook residents and artists!

To walk into an art space in Manhattan and see their work hanging there was such a beautiful reminder of why exposure and opportunity matter.

Our young artists deserve to see their work beyond the walls of their classrooms and communities. They deserve to take up space in galleries, studios, museums, art fairs, and creative spaces throughout NYC and beyond.

And seeing Shashia continuing to grow from a young artist developing her voice at RHAP to a college student exhibiting her work in spaces alongside artists from around the world is exactly the kind of journey we want our younger students to witness.

And we LOVE seeing Red Hook represented through Shelby as well!

Red Hook was in the building!

Congratulations, Sashia and Shelby. Keep creating. Keep showing up. Keep taking up space.

This is why we say ART SAVES LIVES.

THIS is what it’s all about.

From the moment Sashia found RHAP, she came in knowing that art was more than something she loved she understood that her creativity could open doors and help her build a future.

And she has been putting in the work ever since.

From developing her portfolio and getting accepted into LaGuardia High School, to continuing her education in college, Sashia has consistently taken the opportunities in front of her and made them work for HER.

A few years ago, through our partnership with Art Gowanus, Sashia took on an intense application process for an incredible opportunity. She completed the application, submitted her work, and GOT ACCEPTED!

Today, while still attending college, she is leading her own art studio, developing her practice, and showcasing her artwork in major spaces. She continues to open doors for herself while showing other young artists what is possible when talent meets focus, preparation, and opportunity.

This is what we mean at RHAP when we talk about developing Emerging Artists and young leaders.

We don't just want our students to create beautiful artwork. We want them to understand the power of their creativity. We want them to learn how to apply for opportunities, advocate for themselves, build relationships, develop careers, lead spaces, and eventually open doors for the young people coming behind them.

Sashia understood the assignment.

She grabbed every opportunity she could, put in the work, and continues to lead the way for young girls and boys who look like her.

Congratulations, Sashia! Your RHAP family is incredibly proud of you. Keep creating. Keep growing. Keep leading. And most importantly keep opening those doors.
