New to B&W Film Photography? Join us next month for our 3-Day Film Photography Intensive with David Vades Joseph ()!

Ideal for beginners or those looking to refresh their skills, this course covers the essential techniques of analog image making—from operating a 35mm film camera to processing negatives and making prints in the darkroom.

No prior darkroom or photography experience is needed. Tuition includes 2 rolls of film and 25 sheets of RC paper.

This Summer 2026, try out a new darkroom process, move a project forward, and connect with Penumbra’s creative community.

June, July, and August are filled with workshops & online classes designed for photographers at any stage—from those just getting started to artists looking to refine their work.

✶ Call for interns! We’re seeking two candidates for our 4-month digitization internship, a unique program offering participants the opportunity to work with an established artist and digitize a project from their archive.

Using our state-of-the-art Digitization System, you’ll play a vital part in photographic preservation and the creation of an historical record.

Applicants should be early in their careers—either in school studying photography or demonstrating an equivalent commitment to a career in photography.

Benefits include a $4,000 stipend + $500 for transport and meals, training from industry professionals, hands-on experience working with a range of equipment, the opportunity to work with an established artist and their archive, access to Penumbra’s facilities and events, dedicated time to develop personal projects, and more.

Can’t make it to an in-person workshop, but still interested in learning alt processes? Join us for our 5-week online course on cyanotype, salted paper, and albumen printing with Brittonie Fletcher () starting next month.⁠

Designed for both beginners and experienced photographers, An Introduction to Alternative Process provides practical guidance on setting up a home workspace—whether in a kitchen, basement, or studio—while ensuring safe and accessible methods for printing.⁠

Participants will learn how to source materials affordably, while creating a range of prints with different processes and toning methods, working with personal images, found objects, or cliché verres. While the course looks to the past, it also examines contemporary photographic practices, fostering a deeper understanding of the medium’s evolution. ⁠

Sundays, June 21 - July 26 (skip July 5) | 1-4pm EST⁠

Tonight at the opening of Turm und Taxis, a solo exhibition by Witho Worms, on view in our Exhibition Space through July 31st.

Witho will be leading a carbon printing demo next Tuesday, June 2, from 5-8pm, for those interested in learning more about the process. He’ll share methodologies and formulas for each step of the technique, before giving a live printing demonstration using pre-sensitized tissue and paper negatives. Attendees will be invited to participate, working together and seeing results in real time.

Curious about this process? Join us for our one-day workshop with Brittonie Fletcher on Sunday, June 7th, and learn how to make paper developers from scratch. During class, we’ll explore how different chemical components influence tone, contrast, and color palette, and compare the results of DIY formulas to commercial options.

All materials will be provided. No prior darkroom experience is required to join.
