One week ago today we held our annual Direct Support Professionals Appreciation Day with opportunities for our DSPs to laugh, learn, connect, reflect, and recharge as we celebrated our theme of “Growth.”

In addition to breakfast and lunch, we had professional development seminars on Executive Functioning skills and Aging with Dignity, yoga sessions and chair massages, improv ice breakers, and recognitions to herald our DSPs’ work.

Thank you again to all the incredible professionals who make Job Path’s mission come to life so New Yorkers with autism and other developmental disabilities can thrive!

If you’re looking for a success story, Josh W., who works in the mailroom at a midtown law firm, definitely delivers.

Josh recently celebrated 15 years in the mailroom for Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison LLP. Michael J. Gomez, Mailroom and Reprographics Account Director, says his pleasant, polite attitude makes him an excellent team member. In a world where so much communication is impersonal and online, a friendly warm smile makes a big difference in customer service.

“I think it builds relationships,” says Gomez, seen here on the right with Josh. “When we have people like Josh, who's extremely friendly, and always willing to help, it enhances the department's reputation - makes it better.”

Asked what he likes about his job, Josh says he likes the people he works with and the chance to make the rounds over more than a dozen floors as he drops off mail and packages. (He gives bonus points to the food in the firm’s cafeteria - a plus for any job.)

One of the ways Job Path works with people in the Community Connection program is through educational support that provides them with the tools they need to pursue higher education goals.

This fall, Rusty H. began his Associates Degree in Modern Languages at the Borough of Manhattan Community College, taking classes in Italian 101 and English 101. He’s already conversational in Spanish, Italian, French, German, Mandarin, and earned his certificate in Arabic from NYU's School of Professional Studies in 2014.

At BMCC, Job Path DSP AnnEliza Canning-Skinner supports him with notetaking and other assistance with organization and time management.

“That helps me be an active listener in class and to participate in class discussions more,” he says. He hopes his degree will help him with his love for travel and experiencing other cultures, and also as he's looking for future work in the clerical field.

“I like reading books about other polyglots and how English borrows words from many other languages,” he says.

For his English class this semester, he wrote a paper on how he taught himself to read at 14 months, including this passage: “As a teenager in high school, reading helped me understand that progress isn’t possible without sacrifice and that sacrifice is the key to any form of success.”

As we continue to mark we’re blooming with excitement to share this profile of a truly 🌹🌺🌷beautiful employment match for Mikaila A. and POPUPFLORIST in the city’s floral market neighborhood, on 28th Street.

Mikaila was hired in January to help two days a week with arrangements, shop upkeep, and other tasks, and attributes her on-the-job success to being energetic and organized. She says it’s hard to choose a favorite bloom but lilies and peonies are in her top five. Her supervisors and colleagues say they definitely picked a great hire!

If you’re looking for a quick laugh - check out this clip from the Community Connections Zakaa Rollers Sketch Comedy Show!

Congrats to the whole group for last month’s series of incredible performances. All the sketches were conceived, written, and performed by members of the troupe, including this one, "Batman." The group’s aim is “to amplify marginalized voices, uplift the disabled, de-stigmatize developmental disabilities, and foster a deeper understanding within the community through the shared language of comedy.”

The Mets may be long gone from contention (until next year!) but we had a great time at our first "JPlay Ball” outing last month. Thanks to The Mets for donating tickets and for the participants, families, and staff who came out to cheer!

Last week was but we wanted to keep our gratitude rolling, since it’s a theme that’s important for us all year.

We’ve been showing what makes our DSPs so special by asking the people who know them best: Job Path participants. Jose G. works with Anson Chan in our Community Connections program and they’ve developed a special bond over improv lessons, financial budgeting sessions, and just hanging out.

Shawn R., who works as an office assistant for a nonprofit in Midtown says she is “honored, happy, and blessed” to have her DSP job coach, Kateryna Korobkina.

As we mark (Sept. 14-19) we wanted to show what makes our DSPs so special, so we asked the people who know them best: Job Path participants. Here’s another one of their stories.

Shawn, seen here on the right, has been supported by Job Path in a variety of office roles since 2012 and has been at her current job for three years. Kat has been with Job Path for almost a year and a half, and the two hit it off immediately.

“Kat is super supportive of my work, and happy for me and for all the important work I have done at my office,” Shawn says. “I am still so happy to be with Kat these days, as she is still my new partner at my job site. Kat is supportive and encouraging as I continue to perform all my jobs individually.”
