Applications for the 2027 Asian American Youth Scholarship close Sunday, Nov 22 at 11:59 PM. Late ones aren’t accepted.

An essay, a video, a résumé, a transcript, and a headshot. Start this weekend and it’s a comfortable deadline. Start Nov 21 and it isn’t.

Freshmen and sophomores, you're early, which is the best time to be here. Juniors, this is your year. Seniors, come for regular decision strategy and what happens after you submit. Parents, come with them.

Five things, one weekend:

A headshot. A one-page resume. Your transcript, official or not. An essay between 250 and 500 words. A video under a minute.

The video is just you on camera. Introduce yourself, answer one prompt, no script. Pick the essay prompt you actually have a story for.

People are already using it, and the questions are good:

"My daughter's GPA dropped junior year when we moved. Will colleges hold that against her?"

"I volunteer at my church but have no club leadership. Does that count?"

"We're first-gen and I don't know how to help with essays. Where do we start?"

2:00 Check in 2:30 John's presentation 4:00 Q&A 4:30 Smaller group questions, resource tables, and a chance to talk to people one on one

You can leave at 4, but the last half hour is usually where the specific questions get answered.

Applications are open

The 2027 Asian American Youth Scholarship is taking applications from sophomores, juniors, and seniors in NYC and on Long Island.

Multiple scholarships, $1,000 to $3,000 each. Applying gets you screened for the in-person competition on January 23, which is where the scholarships are awarded.

Parents: you don't need to become an admissions expert to be useful here.

You mostly need to know how the process works, what the deadlines actually are, and when to push versus when to leave them alone.

Come with your student on Nov 7. Sitting through the same three hours means you stop having two different versions of the plan.
