The FLAG Art Foundation, founded in 2008 by art patron Glenn Fuhrman, is a non-profit exhibition space that encourages the appreciation of contemporary art among a diverse audience. FLAG presents four to six exhibitions a year that include artworks by international, established and emerging artists, borrowed from a variety of sources. FLAG invites a broad range of creative individuals to curate ex

hibitions and works in-depth with artists to provide curatorial support and a platform to realize their own solo exhibitions. Based in Manhattan's Chelsea art district, FLAG and
its related programs are free and open to the public

𝗙𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗱𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗙𝗟𝗔𝗚: Meg Webster's "Thicket," 2026, was recently on view at Paula Cooper Gallery from May 9-July 31, 2026. The artist's "Copper Disk Sometimes Warmed by the Sun," 2015, was also recently exhibited in FLAG's UNTIL THE MOON COMES OVER THE MOUNTAIN, on view from May 17-July 31, 2026.

Two of Webster's earlier works, "Steel Containing Salt," 1990, and "Moss Bed, King," 1986-88/2026, are currently included in "This Land: Considering the American Landscape" at The Church through September 6, 2026, curated by Donna De Salvo and Seph Rodney. Part II of UNTIL THE MOON COMES OVER THE MOUNTAIN at the Parrish Art Museum, on view through November 8, 2026, also features Webster's "Copper Containing Salt II," 2017.

𝗣𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗻𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽: The FLAG Art Foundation and Puck are excited to announce The Art of Influence, the second annual art world summit.

Taking place on Wednesday, September 23, 10 AM-4 PM, at The Bowery Hotel, FLAG Founder Glenn Fuhrman and Puck's Marion Maneker will host a day of conversation about the art market.

Ten artists will be selected via an application process to attend the event for free, made possible by The FLAG Art Foundation. To apply, fill out the questionnaire below before Tuesday, September 8, 5 PM. Selected applicants will be contacted the following week.

𝗙𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗔𝗿𝗰𝗵𝗶𝘃𝗲: "and I will wear you in my heart of heart," previously on view at FLAG May 1-August 13, 2021.

Centering on a gesture of care, the 35 artists included in “and I will wear you in my heart of heart" explored the myriad ways in which tenderness is evoked in depictions of lovers and friends, familial exchanges, and moments of solitude. Meant to embody the cross-generational resurgence in figuration as a mode of exploring identity, cultural histories, and personal experiences, the presentation nods to a line from (and spoken by) Hamlet that addresses that which we hold closest, be it a relationship, a feeling, one’s own well-being, an object, or a dream. Illustratively, the “heart of heart” is akin to a castle’s keep, an innermost stronghold and safeguard from the outside world.

Join the Parrish Art Museum tomorrow, August 20, 2-4 PM, for a conversation with FLAG founder Glenn Fuhrman and contemporary art journalist Jacoba Urist on the publication of "Collecting Contemporaries: The Fuhrman Collection," published by Phaidon.

The discussion offers a closer look at the Fuhrman Collection, with reflections on artists including Gerhard Richter, Damien Hirst, Ed Ruscha, Cy Twombly, Simone Leigh, Amy Sherald, and Richard Serra. A reception will follow the program.

Pre-registration includes a complimentary copy of the book. The book will also be available for purchase in the Museum Shop.

A Page from FLAG's 𝗖𝘂𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗡𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗯𝗼𝗼𝗸:

Completed in the summer of 1971, David Hockney’s “Sur la Terrasse” was painted during the decline of his relationship with artist and author Peter Schlesinger: his first love and greatest muse. In the painting, Hockney writes himself into the composition through the sheer force of his gaze, articulated through dramatic, luminous shadows, sweeping perspectival lines, and grand cinematic scale. “Sur la Terrasse” is less a portrait of Schlesinger than a portrayal of the artist observing him; it’s also perhaps a snapshot of the moment at which Schlesinger became a stranger to Hockney. “The sun may be shining on an idyllic landscape,” writes art historian and curator Marco Livingstone, “but the scene is glimpsed from within the threshold of a temporarily occupied hotel room; the artist, subconsciously or by design, represents himself as in retreat, absenting himself or saying his farewells. It is of no little symbolic importance that in the picture Peter has resolutely turned his back on him.”

David Hockney’s “Sur la Terrasse,” 1971, is included in the group exhibition “The Way We Live Now,” co-curated by Hilton Als and Ann Philbin, in collaboration with Skarlet Smatana, on view at the George Economou Collection, Athens, through March 2027.

𝗙𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗱𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗙𝗟𝗔𝗚: Martine Gutierrez has been commissioned for several performances alongside her collaborator Julio Torres in conjunction with the “Whitney Biennial 2026."

On view at the Whitney Museum of American Art through August 23, 2026, the exhibition is curated by Marcela Guerrero and Drew Sawyer. The performances by Gutierrez and Torres will take place at Little Island NYC between August 27-30, 2026.

Gutierrez's "Real Doll, Raquel 1" and "Real Doll, Raquel 3," both from 2013, were exhibited in the exhibition "Disturbing Innocence," curated by Eric Fischl, previously on view at FLAG October 13-January 12, 2015. In her "Real Dolls" series, Gutierrez transforms into life-size s*x dolls named Raquel, Ebony, Luxx, and Mimi, in staged domestic environments. Exploring manufactured forms of objectification and identity through photography and her performance of each character, Gutierrez’s work visualizes the complexities amongst s*xual desire, violence, and societal standards ruling femininity.

“Disturbing Innocence" featured over 50 historical and contemporary artists who use dolls, toys, mannequins, robots, and other surrogate forms. Posing questions surrounding the social constructs of youth, beauty, transformation, violence, s*xuality, gender, and loneliness, the exhibition presented a subversive and escapist world at odds with the values and pretensions of polite society.

𝗙𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗔𝗿𝗰𝗵𝗶𝘃𝗲: "Mystic Parallax," a solo exhibition by multidisciplinary artist Awol Erizku, previously on view at FLAG from September 26- November 14, 2020.

"Mystic Parallax" included new sculptures, ash and incense smoke drawings, photo-based works, and a series of short films that collectively acted as a counternarrative to the historically Westernized discourse on African and African American culture. The exhibition aimed to construct a new paradigm; a break from master narratives and Eurocentric intellectual gatekeepers; the treatment of Africa as a monolith; mythopoeia; post-structuralism; culture as commodity; and impact of language on the construction of meaning.

𝗨𝗽𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴: FLAG is pleased to present “Clockwork,” a solo exhibition featuring new and recent work by Sable Elyse Smith, the recipient of the 2026 Suzanne Deal Booth / FLAG Art Foundation Prize. Smith’s exhibition will be on view at FLAG from September 24, 2026-February 13, 2027, and was previously exhibited at The Contemporary Austin from March 6-August 2, 2026.

In its New York iteration, Smith expands the exhibition’s more cinematic elements into an immersive stage set environment, where video becomes an immediate means of visualizing unseen, ordinary violence. Including large scale sculpture, video, neon, and photography, the exhibition interrogates the fundamental systems of power that define contemporary society, as well as their cultural and psychological impacts.

A Page from FLAG's 𝗖𝘂𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗡𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗯𝗼𝗼𝗸:

Established by Dia Art Foundation in 1983, Dia Bridgehampton was designed by Dan Flavin to permanently house an installation of his work alongside a program of temporary exhibitions. With Dia’s support, Flavin renovated this turn-of-the-century Shingle-style firehouse, then church, converting its vestibule and second floor into a permanent exhibition space of nine works in fluorescent light, a selection of which is pictured here.
