Ngawang Choephel is a Tibetan musician, filmmaker, and activist who dedicated his life to preserving Tibet’s culture through art. In 1995, while documenting traditional music in Tibet, he was arrested by Chinese authorities and imprisoned for six years.

Despite the harsh conditions, Ngawang never lost his resolve. His courage and creativity turned his story into a symbol of resistance, reminding the world that Tibetan culture is not only alive but thriving. Today, through the Tibetan Cultural Preservation Project, he continues to inspire new generations to celebrate and protect our heritage.

Ngawang’s story is a powerful reminder: culture is resistance. 🌄🎶

On April 2nd, responded to our concerns about the proposed Chinese super-embassy in London, in support of it.
After we shared further information about the Chinese Communist Party’s extensive human rights violations, we were deeply concerned to see that he later attended discussions in Wuhan on UK-China collaboration in early years education. This includes so-called “boarding schools” where Tibetan, Uyghur, and other ethnic minority children are forcibly separated from their families, stripped of their language, and subjected to CCP propaganda.

Every Wednesday, we gather in chupa, dance in circles, and celebrate being Tibetan. But Lhakar — White Wednesday — began not with music, but with quiet resistance.

Born out of the 2008 uprising inside Tibet, Lhakar was a peaceful response to repression. Tibetans chose to resist through culture: speaking our language, wearing our clothes, supporting our own people. No protest signs. Just identity, fiercely held.

Today, as Lhakar grows and evolves in exile, let’s remember its roots.

In 1964, at just 24, Jetsun Pema stepped in to lead the Tibetan Children’s Village (TCV). What started with just 51 children grew into a nationwide network that’s educated over 50,000 Tibetan youth in exile.

Known as “Ama La,” she built more than schools—she built a community rooted in Tibetan language, identity, and love. Her leadership ensured that each TCV school became a home of care, resilience, and hope.

She is more than the Dalai Lama’s sister—she is a symbol of selfless resistance and a lifelong guardian of our future.

🌍 This Earth Day, let’s turn our eyes to the Roof of the World — Tibet.

Home to the headwaters of 10 major rivers, Tibet is the lifeline of Asia — providing water to nearly 2 billion people across more than 11 countries. Its glaciers, rivers, and rich natural resources don’t just sustain Tibetans — they sustain a continent.

But this vital ecosystem is under threat. From melting glaciers to unsustainable mining and dam-building, Tibet’s fragile environment is being exploited without the voice or consent of its people.

To protect Asia’s future, we must protect Tibet.
Because Tibet’s freedom is Asia’s sustainability.
