Athlete Ally is the longest-standing nonprofit in the United States dedicated to fostering allyship in athletics.

Athlete Ally is a nonprofit organization working to build a future where sports welcome everyone, without prejudice or stereotypes, by educating and activating athletic communities to exercise their leadership to champion LGBT equality. We provide public awareness campaigns, educational programming, tools and resources to foster inclusive sports communities. We mobilize Ambassadors in collegiate, professional and Olympic sports who work to foster “allyship” in their athletic environments. The programs include Ambassadors from over 60 colleges and over 150 professional athletes.

My Story, My Words is a new written series from Athlete Ally. It begins from the premise that athletes and coaches are not only the subjects of sport stories; they are witnesses to what happens day in and day out in sport and are the narrators of their own experiences. Today’s story is told by Ford McLiney, the Head Diving Coach at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln and Director of the Nebraska Diving Club.

Titled, “The Coach I Needed When I Was Young,” the story explores his upbringing, different aspects of identity and expression, and how the lessons learned along the way have impacted the way he handles his coaching career.
