🌍💚 Happy Earth Day! Our power, our planet. Earth Day reminds us that change doesn’t come from one moment or one voice. It’s sustained by everyday actions from families, educators, and communities working together to care for the world around us.

At LINC, we believe those same everyday moments of reading together, asking questions, and noticing the world, are how children begin to understand connection, care, and responsibility for their environment. 🌱 Here are a few of our favorite Earth Day reads to explore with little ones:

📖 "The EARTH Book" BY Todd Parr
📖 "Change Starts with Us" by Sophie Beer
📖 "My First Earth Day" by Karen Katz
📖 "Help Save Our Earth: Small Changes for a Big Impact" by Little Grasshopper Books (Author), Publications International Ltd., illustrated by Tjarda Borsboom
📖 "Happy Earth Day!" by Deborah Hopkinson, illustrated by Jennifer Zivoin

Because when children learn to care for the planet, they’re also learning how to care for each other. Sign up for your next LINC reading adventure: lincnyc.org/programs

🦒✨ A glowing start to CFR Month! This April, we kicked off CFR Month with a Little Readers Glow Safari with our partners at the Bronx Zoo, bringing families together for an afternoon of storytelling, discovery, and early literacy in action.

From glow-in-the-dark sensory play and scavenger hunts to a joyful read-aloud of "Solitary Animals: Introverts of the Wild," written by Joshua David Stein and illustrated by Dominique Ramsey, over 50 families explored how reading can come to life anywhere, even at the zoo. 📚🌿

A huge thank you to our incredible CFR partners: NYPL The New York Public Library, JCCA, and La Fuerza Unida, Inc. for providing free books and helping make this day so special. We were also honored to be joined by Assemblymember Hon. Karines Reyes, RN, a dedicated advocate for Bronx families and early literacy.

City’s First Readers is all about helping families weave reading into everyday moments, because those small moments build strong readers for life. Read our blog post and explore upcoming CFR events near you: tinyurl.com/CFRBronxZoo

📚🫶🏾 Happy National Library Week and a special thank you on to the spaces that make early literacy possible across NYC.

Libraries are where stories begin, families connect, and young children build the skills they need to thrive. From first books to first words, these spaces help turn everyday moments into opportunities for learning and growth.

At LINC, we believe literacy starts at birth, and our library partners help bring that mission to life by ensuring families have access to books, resources, and joyful reading experiences in every borough. 💞 With gratitude to our incredible partners: NYPL The New York Public Library, Bronx Library Center - NYPL, Kingsbridge Branch Library, NYPL, Queens Public Library's Baisley Park Library, Brooklyn Public Library's Arlington Library, & NYPL's Stapleton Library.

Because when communities come together around reading, children don’t just learn to read, they build the foundation to succeed. Start your next LINC reading adventure: lincnyc.org/programs

💬 This week’s Vroom tip (⬆️ Desliza para español): Laundry day just became sing-along time! 👶🏽🎶

When you’re doing laundry, turn each step into a song—adding detergent, closing the washer, switching loads, folding clothes. Watch your child and echo the sounds they make so you can build a song together. 🧺🧼

These playful back-and-forth moments turn an everyday chore into connection, helping your child tune into sounds, rhythms, and early language skills, all while having fun with you.

🧺✨ It’s National Laundry Day and yes, even this chore can spark big learning moments! Sorting socks, folding shirts, matching colors—these everyday tasks are full of opportunities to build language, problem-solving, and connection through simple talk, play, and discovery.

Here are a few of our favorite laundry-themed reads to keep the learning (and fun) going:
📗 "Uh-Oh Echo Helps with the Laundry" by Shannon Ashley Reedy
📗 "Laundry Day" by Jessixa Bagley
📗 "Mrs. McNosh Hangs Up Her Wash" by Sarah Weeks, illustrated by Nadine Bernard Westcott
📗 "Clothesline Clues to Jobs People Do" by Kathryn Heling and Deborah Hembrook, illustrated by Andy Robert Davies

✍🏽️📖 April is National Poetry Month, a global celebration of poetry’s power to spark imagination, language, and joy in readers of all ages. This year also marks The Academy of American Poets 30th anniversary, honoring three decades of poems shared in classrooms, libraries, and homes around the world.

Here are a few poetry-filled books to enjoy with your little one at home:
📓 "1 Is One" by Tasha Tudor
📓 "Honey for You, Honey for Me" by Michael Rosen, illustrated by Chris Riddell
📓 "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star" by Eric Carle (The World of Eric Carle)
📓 "Shout!: Little Poems" by Brod Bagert, illustrated by Sachiko Yoshikawa
📓 "A Children's Treasury of Nursery Rhymes" by Linda Bleck
📓 "Won't You Be My Neighbor?" by Fred Rogers (Mister Rogers' Neighborhood) illustrated by Luke Flowers

Read them aloud, sing them, repeat them—poetry is one of the easiest and most joyful ways to build your child’s early literacy skills. 🎶🧠 Sign up for your next LINC reading adventure: lincnyc.org/programs

💌🏙️ A love letter to NYC families: powered by stories, voices, and community. This April, as we celebrate Diversity Month and Volunteer Month, we’re reflecting on the people who brought LINC’s campaign to life across all five boroughs.

For the month of March, with our partners at Fidelis Care we welcomed families with children (birth–5) into joyful, literacy-rich spaces rooted in representation and connection. Together, we:

📖 Distributed 500+ free books
✍️ Shared “mirrors and windows” through diverse stories
🌎 Celebrated culture, language, and identity
🧑‍🧑‍🧒 Created meaningful moments between children and caregivers

A heartfelt thank you to our incredible guest authors: ✨ Elizabeth Balaguer, Susie Jaramillo, Shoshanah K. Hobson, Nettie Atkisson, Jenn Cruzado, and Ashley Woodfolk. We were also grateful to have the support of Council Member Eric Dinowitz in uplifting our work and showing up for LINC families.

And to our dedicated LINC staff and community volunteers—your care, energy, and commitment made every space feel welcoming and full of possibility. To our LINC families: thank you for showing up and sharing your stories with us.

Because when children see themselves—and each other—in the stories they read, they don’t just learn to read, they learn they belong. Sign up for your LINC reading adventure: lincnyc.org/programs

💛 🩺 During Global Public Health Week, we’re celebrating the power of literacy as a foundation for lifelong health. Through our partnership with SBH Health System we’re raising healthy readers in the Bronx, bringing books, language, and learning into pediatric spaces where families already are.

From “read while you wait” programs to take-home books and literacy kits, this work connects healthy bodies with healthy minds from birth, because early literacy helps families better understand, access, and navigate their health.

At LINC, we believe public health starts with early childhood, and when children and caregivers build strong reading routines, they’re building stronger futures. 📚🤝 Together, we’re embedding literacy into community care so every child can grow, thrive, and enter school ready to read and ready for life. Happy National Library Day! 📚🏛️ Today, we celebrate the heart of our communities ✨libraries✨ and the powerful role they play in shaping young readers.

Across Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx, and Staten Island, our library partners are more than just places for books. They are vibrant hubs where families gather, stories come to life, and children build the foundational literacy skills they need to thrive.

At LINC, we believe literacy starts at birth and libraries help make that possible. By connecting families, schools, and communities, they ensure every child has access to books, resources, and the joy of reading from day one.

💞Thank you to our incredible partners NYPL The New York Public Library, Bronx Library Center - NYPL, Kingsbridge Branch Library, NYPL, Queens Public Library + Baisley Park Library, Brooklyn Public Library Family's Arlington Library, & NYPL: Stapleton Library for helping bring literacy to life across NYC.

Because when communities come together around reading, children arrive at the schoolhouse door ready to learn, and ready to succeed. Sign up for your LINC reading adventure: lincnyc.org/programs
