It honors diverse Tribal Nations, raises awareness of their struggles and resilience, and promotes understanding and unity among cultures.

Please join our Freedom Vigil in Appleton, MN on Sunday, October 11 at 2:00 PM CDT, organized by your fellow community members in solidarity with our friends, neighbors, and community members who are being unjustly detained and deported by ICE. By signing up, you will help us build our collective power as we add our vigil to the ever expanding map of Freedom Vigils occurring every week across the country.

This will be a peaceful, family-friendly event featuring community speakers, moments of reflection, and opportunities to take action. Please join us and bring signs! Together, our voices will rise as we build momentum and increase the public pressure to stop the deportations, shut the detention centers, and end the inhumane attacks on immigrants.

This week’s Yiddish Song highlight, Ale Brider (All Brothers), is an adaptation of a poem by Morris Winchevsky published in Arbeter Fraynd Aug. 29, 1890. In the 1920s the folk song, much as we know it today, titled “Di Kalekotke,” was published by the Yiddish writer and folklorist A. Litvin. Litvin noted the song ”was the most popular folk song that was sung in the old country, mostly at Bundist parties. . . Each time it was sung something was added by each singer extemporaneously.”

Some of the most passionate Yiddish love poetry and prose was written about this park in the Bronx that has fallen off the beaten track in the last century. In this site-specific course we will explore the neighborhood and the literature it inspired. The tour will be conducted entirely in Yiddish. This event is free with a suggested donation of $18. Since the October 7 attacks, countless lives have been destroyed in Gaza and Israel. We mourn the loss of 1,200 Israelis killed on October 7, and more than 74,000 Palestinians in Gaza who have been killed in the three years since. The scale of this loss obscures the fact that each and every person killed since October 7, 2023 had a family and friends, hopes and aspirations, entire lives they should have lived but now never will.

While we cannot bring them back, we must recommit ourselves to the struggle for the world that our Jewish and human values demand: one where the catastrophic violence of the last three years is impossible. We must build a shenere un besere velt far ale: a better and more beautiful world for everyone, without exception — a world built on equality, understanding, and respect for human rights.

May their memories be for a blessing.
