Older Americans Month
"Addressing Ageism in Our Work"*
Alexandra Webb, LCSW (she/her)
Senior Vice-President for Training & Initiative

*Older adults are the fastest growing segment of the population in New York State, yet most do not receive the healthcare and support they need, due in part to ageism.
Ageism is more than a societal bias; it affects the physical and mental health and overall well-being of older people every day. As behavioral health providers, we play a critical role in challenging harmful stereotypes about aging to improve outcomes for the older adults we support.
In this session, we will define ageism and examine its impact on the social determinants of health, reflect on our own internalized bias, and explore the use of age-affirming language when speaking with and advocating on behalf of older adults.

Alcohol isn't just a drink; it's a risk factor for cancer.

Alcohol-related emergency department visits among females, particularly middle-aged women, have surged significantly, with data showing a 96% increase through early 2026.
Women have nearly closed the historical gender gap in alcohol consumption, leading to faster rising rates of ER visits for alcohol-related illnesses, such as liver diseases and acute intoxication.

About 178,000 people die from excessive drinking each year. That's enough to fill the Rose Bowl Stadium nearly 2 times. To save lives, communities can use effectively strategies like regulating the number of stores that sell alcohol, updating alcohol taxes, and limiting the hours alcohol is sold.
