Over the past 18 months, ICE operations have expanded across the country as the administration pushes for mass deportations. Large-scale enforcement efforts have left communities fractured and scared.

For many of our Fellows, these operations have been in their own cities. 2025 Justice Fellow Haley Todd Newsome, based in New Orleans at Project Ishmael, explains the broad community response to Operation Catahoula Crunch and what she learned about being an immigration attorney.

Are you an IJC alum? Take our 5-minute alumni survey!

The survey results help us keep track of our network. We're hoping to better connect alumni across the country, source alumni for panels and other speaking engagements hosted by IJC, and create connections with current Fellows who are building careers and looking for advice.

The results are also instrumental in our fundraising efforts, as we strive to show the impact of IJC's work on the broader immigration field.

Take the survey and then share it with all your IJC alumni friends!

Selected for their exceptional talent and deep compassion, our 2026 Justice Fellows will provide quality legal representation to detained immigrants, asylum seekers, families, and children who cannot afford counsel.

Legal representation for immigrants is a lifeline, 2026 Fellow Nayarith Franco-Vasquez, said. Nayarith will join IJC in the fall, working at Esperanza Immigrant Rights Project in Los Angeles.

"It is not just about the legal outcomes; it is about dignity, clarity, and making sure people are given a voice and a real chance in a system that too often denies both," Nayarith said.

Happy Immigrant Heritage Month!

We are proud to be an organization built by immigrants and for immigrants.

"Immigrants strengthen the United States through their labor, entrepreneurship, and cultural contributions, sustaining industries and communities across the country," 2026 Justice Fellow Raul Rodrigues said. "Their presence and work are deeply woven into the nation’s economic growth and social vitality. Legal representation is not merely helpful: it is essential to ensure fairness, protect basic rights, and give immigrants a meaningful opportunity to be heard."

Selected for their exceptional talent and deep compassion, our 2026 Justice Fellows will provide quality legal representation to detained immigrants, asylum seekers, families, and children who cannot afford counsel.

As a first generation law student, Sofia Garcia has sometimes felt overwhelmed when thinking about how to build her career. But having IJC's network of advocates to learn from "makes all the difference," she said.

"Coming from a family of immigrants, I have witnessed firsthand the challenges of navigating our legal system," Sofia said. "This work is personal to me, and IJC's dedication to making quality legal representation accessible resonates deeply."

This month, our Fellowship team organized gatherings for our Fellows, aimed at building community and getting creative.

Across the country, in Los Angeles, Chicago and New York, Fellows and IJC staff met up at art cafes, making and painting pottery.

We are also organizing mini-gatherings across the country, where small groups of fellows in cities ranging from Atlanta to Houston to Minneapolis will join together for dinner and conversation.

Thank you to all the Fellows who are joining us at these gatherings!

Selected for their exceptional talent and deep compassion, our 2026 Justice Fellows will provide quality legal representation to detained immigrants, asylum seekers, families, and children who cannot afford counsel.

For Fellows like Raul Rodrigues, joining IJC means representing a community he feels deeply passionate about.

"Many immigrants must navigate a complex and unforgiving legal system, often without understanding the language, procedures, or consequences involved," Raul said. "On the other hand, immigrants continue to strengthen the United States through their labor, entrepreneurship, and cultural contributions, sustaining industries and communities across the country. Their presence and work are deeply woven into the nation’s economic growth and social vitality."
