The first weeks of an outbreak matter.

The World Health Organization has declared the current Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda a Public Health Emergency of International Concern. The outbreak is being caused by the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola, a rare variant for which there is currently no approved vaccine.

Across East and Central Africa, health workers, communities, and governments are moving quickly to strengthen surveillance, raise awareness, and prevent further spread.

Amref is supporting community education, disease surveillance, infection prevention efforts, and frontline health workers in Uganda and South Sudan. These investments help communities respond safely today while strengthening the health systems that will protect them tomorrow.

Strong local health systems are the first line of defense against infectious disease outbreaks. They are also essential to global health security.

We can't wait to celebrate with you!

Today is International Menstrual Hygiene Day.
For many girls like Margaret, menstruation stood in the way of their future.

Without clean water and safe sanitation facilities, many schoolgirls were unable to attend class during their periods. Some went home and missed important days of school.

Amref Health Africa helped change that. Through new water points, sanitation facilities, and safe spaces, girls can now learn with greater confidence, dignity, and security. Because education should never depend on access to water.

🚨 A dangerous Ebola outbreak is spreading across Africa, and Amref health teams are racing to contain it before it escalates further.

This outbreak is different. The Bundibugyo strain currently has no vaccine or treatment. Confirmed cases have already crossed borders into major travel hubs and communities facing conflict, displacement, and fragile health systems are especially vulnerable.

Amref is already mobilizing in Uganda and South Sudan alongside Ministries of Health and local communities to strengthen surveillance, support frontline health workers, establish isolation facilities, and expand community awareness efforts.

The first weeks of an outbreak are critical and local response matters.

After three years, the Capital Santé Project in Senegal is coming to a close, leaving behind stronger connections between schools, communities, and health systems that will continue supporting children and families for years to come.

Together in partnership with Astellas Global Health Foundation, we helped expand access to child health services across the Sédhiou and Kolda regions through an integrated, community-led approach grounded in prevention, education, and care close to home.

Over the full three-year project:
• 72k+ children and adults were reached through integrated health services and community-based programs.
• 27k+ children accessed school-based health services and education
• 45k+ adults were reached through community engagement and awareness activities
• 17k+ children under five were vaccinated

Thank you to Astellas, the health workers, teachers, volunteers, families, and community leaders who made this work possible.
