Cooper Square Committee works with area residents to contribute to the preservation and development of affordable, environmentally healthy housing and community/cultural spaces so that the Lower East Side remains racially & economically diverse.

As part of Lead Poisoning Prevention Week, we held a Halloween open house on Wednesday with lead educational materials for tenants. 1000's of NYC kids are still being poisoned every year, primarily through old paint in their homes.

Last week, the City Council passed the Community Opportunity to Purchase Act (COPA), after a historic multi-year campaign.

COPA will give qualified nonprofits including Community Land Trusts and other mission-driven buyers the first chance to purchase certain residential buildings before they are sold. By intervening first in the process of selling these properties, COPA will remove chronically neglected buildings from cycles of speculation and protect tenants from displacement.

But passing legislation is just the beginning. We must also make sure tenants know about COPA and the growing Community Land Trust movement in New York City.

So join us on Thursday, October 29, 2026 at 6:30 PM at the Loisaida Center (710 E 9th St) for a Community Land Trust Forum.

This Land Is Ours CLT was formed in 2019 to acquire land in lower Manhattan for affordable housing and community spaces.

Come out to learn more about CLTs -- their mission, who they benefit, who serves on the board, what a ground lease is, and how you can participate in our work moving forward.

Refreshments will be served.

We'll be handing out candy, playing games, and otherwise enjoying the fall weather at this Family Halloween Event on Friday, October 30, 2026 from 4 to 7 PM at Hamilton Fish Recreation Center. Stop by!

This event happens to fall during National Lead Poisoning Prevention Week, so we'll also be talking to parents and other adults about lead in their apartments and how to stay safe.

For the LES Arts & Culture Open House on Saturday, October 17, 2026, Cooper Square Actors Workshop is offering two workshops on Saturday afternoon at the Harriet Putterman Center (61 E 4th, ).

At 1 PM, join Epiphany Samuels for Creating Character Inside and Outside of Acting by looking at power dynamics with Theater Of The Oppressed Games.

This workshop will be followed at 2:30 PM by Direct Address, led by Natasha Simistera, exploring how to remain grounded and return to yourself when addressing an audience. This will be a text and poetry workshop intended to explore public speaking.

TakeRoot Justice celebrating 25 years of providing legal, policy, and research support for organizing in New York City on October 22, 2026 with a benefit at the Manny Cantor Center.

They will be honoring several of their partners over the years, including Cooper Square Committee! There will be food, drinks, music from the Bhangra Liberation Orchestra, and a chance to catch up with the organizers, activists, and community members fighting for a more just and equitable New York City.
