At 13, Gwen was diagnosed with a life-threatening blood disorder and needed a bone marrow transplant. Until then, she had never sat across from a doctor who wasn’t her pediatrician.

“I felt uncomfortable and scared of everything in the clinic,” she says, “from my patient ID bracelet to the beeping IV poles.”

Her care team answered all of her family’s questions. They let her pick the color of her band-aid. Long appointments went by easier with art at the Arts in Medicine Studio, and the Integrative Therapies team got her started on aromatherapy.

Gwen is now in her fourth year of college and, on football Saturdays, she cheers for the University of Delaware.

Most children with B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (B-ALL), the most common type of childhood leukemia, now survive. A new study led by Yale Cancer Center researchers followed the families of 420 of these children to see how treatment affected life at home. https://ow.ly/EbP650ZZJw3

Treatment usually lasts about two and a half years, but the changes at home started much sooner. Two months after diagnosis, more than half of families had already faced a major household change, such as a change in a parent’s job. About two years in, it was more than 8 in 10.
