Behinds the scenes... WARNING... GRAPHIC PICS TO FOLLOW...

We have had a lot of ongoing medical cases these past couple of months. And this is just scratching the surface...

Felicity is a tiny 1.5 pound kitten we found with a degloving injury to her front leg. This brave little girl has endured daily bandage changes and wound cleanings to heal. She is finally almost healed!

A TNR cat with an injured leg came in with what looked like a small wound, but once shaved down, it was a lot worse than we thought. Luckily it wasn't broken, but it did require daily bandage changes, antibiotics, pain meds, and several overnight stays at the vet. He is now healed and back home!

An un-neutered male with both a face and rear leg abscess was treated with antibiotics and returned home. Of course he was neutered as well so he won't be getting into fights anymore!

Mocha, a ten year old colony cat, got into something toxic in her neighborhood and went into acute liver failure. We didn't think she would make it, but a month later and all her liver values are back to normal! She also needed a few broken teeth removed, and will be returning home next week!

Misty, a very spicy feral girl, had a badly broken leg that couldn't be repaired. After healing from her amputation, she was able to return home to her caretaker.

Gracie, a very sweet outdoor kitty, had a non-healing wound under her front arm. After a month of bandage changes, antibiotics, and poltices, her wound is now only a fraction of the size it was. Before much longer she will be as good as new, and we are happy to say her caretaker has found an adopter for her!

Rio is an indoor kitty who became suddenly ill and went blind. After labwork and an ultrasound it was determined he had Neuro/Ocular FIP. We didn't think he would make it, and humane euthanasia was scheduled. But at the last minute we were able to get him on FIP medication. After two weeks at the vet, he has improved enough to go home to finish his meds! We don't know if he will regain his sight, but we are hopeful.

And we had a momma cat give birth in the trap on her way to be spayed! While it's not something we ever want to happen, here we are. So welcome Momma Trix and her three babies- Cocoa Puff, Captain Crunch, and Lucky Charm- who will all be up for adoption soon!

Medical care for community cats is something we are proud to be able to provide. It's literally the difference between life and death for these cats. But we can't do it without you. It isn't cheap. Imagine being left on the side of the road in a soft carrier during a severe thunderstorm... ⛈️

That was the reality for this gorgeous tortie until our volunteer Olivia spotted her, brought her into the safety of a dry car, and changed her life forever. Despite being soaked and abandoned, this girl's sweet spirit never wavered. She is pure love! 😻

Now, she's safe in a foster home and ready for the ultimate happy ending: ADOPTION!

Over 500 cats TNR'd in the last two months. 541 to be exact. I won't even begin to do the math on how many kittens won't be born homeless. How much suffering that will prevent. How much better of a life these cats will have.

We aren't doing this alone. We are proud to help sponsor smaller non-profits trying to get their feet on the ground. We are proud to be a resource for the communities and neighborhoods who are willing to get out there and help these cats. We are proud to have veterinary partners willing to work with us and with the public.

While 541 cats may seem unattainable to some, it's really not. Not when everyone pitches in. When people are given the guidance, tools, and financial resources to do this on their own, they will step up. And when they step up and share their experiences with their friends and neighbors, then they will step up too. And they will feel good about the difference they made.

Community Empowerment. This is how we get it done.

We have been seeing a lot of older kittens and juveniles recently. These are the kittens from the beginning of kitten season that we unfortunately didn't get to. If we get them now, we still have a chance to make a difference in their lives.

But we can't do this alone. We are a small group of volunteers. We have very few trappers. We need your help. We are here to teach you, guide you, and give you the tools you need to succeed. You got this. And we got your back.

These cats can't wait. Don't let them sit on a waiting list that is months long. They need help now. And you can do this. Grab a friend, grab a neighbor, get your community involved. Together we can do this.

June Adoptions!

Congrats to these two very lucky kitties- Trinity and Shortbread! They found their forever homes!

Panleukopenia. Anyone in rescue knows how devastating this virus is. It's highly contagious and extremely lethal. It can kill a healthy kitten in 24hrs.

We trapped a feral momma cat (no more than a kitten herself) along with her 3 tiny kittens about 2 weeks ago. Everyone was doing well- until they weren't. Within 12hrs we noticed one of the kittens wasn't eating as much, and wasn't quite as active. Within another 12hrs, she died in my arms.

We rushed the remaining two kittens and momma cat to Cat Hospital of Metairie. They needed multiple medications, fluids, labwork, and around the clock intensive care. Everyone there did everything in their power to save their lives. And they succeeded. I can't begin to express my gratitude to them for all their hard work.

Their hospital bill was $1600.

We then had to terminally clean the kitten room where they were being fostered. Everything had to be cleaned and sanitized. And then cleaned again.

Cleaning supplies were another $200.

Everything plastic or cloth had to be thrown away. Litterboxes, scoopers, bowls, plates, brooms, mops...
This time we opted to replace as much as possible with stainless steel instead of plastic so it can be more effectively cleaned between kittens.

Another $400 on Amazon for supplies.

You never know what is going to happen in rescue. You bring in a momma cat and her kittens and it's supposed to be easy. Momma will nurse them. She will clean them. She will do all the work. Easy peasy.

$2500 later and you're left wondering what just happened.

Would we do it again? Yes. Most certainly. Until we have spent our very last dollar. Just seeing how great little Wanda and Cosmo are doing now- how could we not?

Heads up.... we will not be trapping this week due to our trapping coordinator being out of town. We have often said if anything happens to Nita Fairley Hemeter that TNR in this city would come to a standstill. And this proves it. No one is willing or able to do what she does for these cats.

If you need cats trapped this week, or anytime actually, you can borrow traps from the LA SPCA and do it yourself. Here is how you do it:

You can bring 1-2 cats at a time to The Louisiana SPCA without an appointment for TNR. They must be in a trap. They cannot be in a carrier. You can rent a trap from the LA SPCA or you can borrow one from us. Just bring the cat to the front entrance on any Tuesday or Thursday between 7:30-9am. You will pick them back up the following day. It is $50 per cat, which includes spay/neuter, vaccines, and eartip. If you are from Jefferson Parish and have a drivers license with a Jefferson Parish address there is no charge. If you cannot afford the $50, we can help you cover the costs.

Be sure to label the trap with your name, address, phone number and a description of what the cat looks like (such as gray tabby adult or black and white adult). You can just write on a piece of duct tape and put it on top of the trap. Also be sure there is newspaper in the bottom of the trap when you trap them. And be sure to cover the trap with a towel or pillowcase at all times to keep the cat calm.

We will be back to business as usual after June 15th, so if you put in a trapping request, please be patient. Requests are already piling up and we will get to you as soon as we can.

There will be a house sitter at Nita's, but they cannot help with anything trapping or cat related. If you have an emergency, please contact the LA SPCA by dialing 911 and asking for Humane Law.

May Adoptions!!!

Only one adoption for May, but it was a good one! Lizard, one of our older guys who is heartworm positive and has no teeth found his forever home! When we rescued Lizard off the streets we honestly didn't know if he would even make it. And now he is thriving! We couldn't be happier for him!

Congrats to Lizard and his new daddy!
