ConnCAT

ConnCAT ConnCAT’s mission is to inspire, motivate, and prepare youth and adults for educational and career advancement, through after-school arts, and job training.
(1)

Established in New Haven in 2011, the Connecticut Center for Arts and Technology, ConnCAT, is a post-secondary career training hub committed to connecting a world-class facility and resources to local need. Currently ConnCAT provides market-relevant job training and placement services to under and unemployed adults and multimedia arts education to under-achieving youth from low-income families. Co

nnCAT draws its inspiration from the workforce development philosophy of Manchester Bidwell Corporation, a nationally accredited and state licensed adult career training institution with roots in Pittsburgh. Lifelong community leader and MacArthur Fellow Bill Strickland founded the Corporation in 1972 with the conviction that environments shapes lives. His simple yet effective approach has been successfully replicated in under-served urban geographies nationwide; including Cleveland, Cincinnati, Boston, and San Francisco. ConnCAT applies the building blocks of the Strickland model—aesthetic space, creative education, supportive staff—to a New Haven context.Drawing upon local talent and deep community relations, ConnCAT has quickly established itself as a place that helps people at the margins of New Haven’s economy find meaningful andrewarding career pathways. At the heart of ConnCAT’s vision is creating a unique learning environment: one that inspires hope, innovation, creativity and excellence, and that elevates individuals’ expectations of themselves and others.

On Tuesday, our Construction Training Academy students had a special guest speaker: José Suarez-Colón, a proud graduate of Cohort 1. He spoke to the current cohort about the importance of focus, commitment, communication, and making the most of the opportunity in front of them.

Since graduating from the program last October, José has earned his OSHA 30 certification and Universal EPA 608 certification. He has secured full-time employment, moved into a newly refurbished apartment, and is demonstrating strong leadership skills in his new role. He is passionate about his journey and committed to inspiring others.

In José’s words:

“I am bettering myself in order to better those around me who are lost or confused by the negative mentors that manipulate and misguide our youth and vulnerable people into a cycle that just doesn’t offer the community purpose or opportunity for growth in the sense of becoming the best person we can be.”

Today, we pause to remember those who courageously gave their lives in service to our country. ConnCAT is closed today as we honor and mourn the brave men and women who gave the ultimate sacrifice.
