Happy Long Island Sound Day!

Celebrated each year on the Friday before Memorial Day, this day recognizes the importance of this estuary to our environment, recreation, and economy as we head into the start of summer.

In recent decades, water quality has improved, and low oxygen levels that can harm marine life have become less common. While conditions are better than they once were, ongoing care and monitoring are essential.

Thank you for being part of its story. The health of Long Island Sound depends on all of us.

Before the 2026 swimming season arrives this weekend, take a dive into our latest beach grades, released this morning.

These grades are based on water quality data collected by local health departments during the 2025 swimming season. Seventy-seven percent of the 192 public and private Long Island Sound beaches received A or B grades, a 5 percent improvement from 2024.

The 10th season of the continues!

This year, we have 31 partner groups monitoring 52 bays and harbors around Long Island Sound.

Every Saturday morning through October, we'll shine our UWS Partner Spotlight on a different monitoring group, introducing you to the people collecting essential water quality data in their local embayments that help us understand the ecological health of those bays and harbors.

Today, meet East Basin Enterprises, which monitors Larchmont Harbor, Mamaroneck Harbor, and Milton Harbor along Westchester County's Sound Shore.
