Thank you to South Coast Girls Walk founders Eric and Sam for sharing at our June Meetup!

We had a great discussion about taking the next step (pun intended) toward building community!

And thanks to Rose Alley Ale House for hosting our crew!

Fayetteville, Arkansas, took a regular two-lane road and asked a better question:

How much of this pavement do we actually need?

On West Avenue near Meadow Street, the lanes used to be wider. Now the street still carries two lanes of traffic, but the extra space has been put to work.

There’s a bioswale collecting stormwater from the street. There are curb extensions that make the road feel narrower, which encourages drivers to slow down. Those same curb extensions protect parking spaces, keep cars from parking too close to the intersection, and make it easier to see what’s happening where the danger is highest.

The street still works for cars, but now the extra pavement has a job too. It holds water, clears sightlines near the intersection, protects parking, and makes the block feel a little less like a place to speed through.

What street in your town has more pavement than it needs?

5-year-old Liam Pinheiro was riding his bike when he was killed by a driver this week.

No family should have to experience the grief that Liam's family is going through. Our hearts go out to them and to the many people affected by this tragedy. Please see the GoFundMe link in the comments to support Liam's family.

At SouthCoast Places for People, we believe that kids in every neighborhood should be able to ride their bikes without their parents fearing for their safety. This is not an unreasonable dream. Nor is it unrealistic.

If we work together, we can prevent tragedies like this in the future. If you're looking to make your neighborhood streets safer for kids, seniors, and everyone in between, we are here for you. More to come on ways you can get involved.

Best wishes to our friends at BRU as they head up to the State House tomorrow!

A year ago, after a heartbreaking summer on Route 6, neighbors from Fairhaven, New Bedford, and beyond came together to ask a simple question: what would it take to make this road safe?

That question became the Route 6 Working Group, now more than 80 residents strong.

One year in, the road hasn't changed much yet. But we have, and we're just getting started. Join us online to hear what we've accomplished, what's ahead, and how you can be part of the work this year.

A group of our West End members is working to create the West End Neighborway: a safe route for kids, seniors, and everyone in between to walk, bike, and roll through and to the neighborhood.

Last night, we shared our initial ideas for this project with neighbors at Coastal Provisions market.

Thanks to all the neighbors who came out and gave input on where you want to be able to go safely, and where you struggle to get around.
